MATH 225: Instructional Planning and Procedures Dr. Gemma S. Legaspi

1. Give your comments on these statements of objectives:

(a) To impart to the students the knowledge of mathematical terms,
symbols, ideas, principles, relationships, etc.

One of the criteria to be considered in creating learning objective is

that it should indicate exactly what the learners should do to attain the
objective. This objective focus more on what the teacher should do because it
says that the teacher should impart.
The verb, impart, cannot be measured by using any assessment tool
and there is no specific lesson mentioned.
This objective can be improved by making it learner – centered,
choosing a verb that can be measured and including a specific topic.

Revised Objective: At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to
identify the mathematical terms, symbols, ideas, principles, and
relationships related to quadratic equations.

(b) To develop personal qualities, e.g., honesty, heartiness, truthfulness,

etc.
This learning objective is under the affective domain. It can be
measured and observed but it should indicate exactly what the learners are
supposed to do to attain the objective. It will be difficult for teachers to identify
how the learners will attain this objective without knowing the specific task. It
will also take a lot of time to see whether their learners have already
developed honesty, heartiness, and truthfulness.
To improve this objective, the specific task that the learners are
supposed to do should be included in the objective.

Revised Objective: At the end of the quarter, the students are expected to
develop their personal qualities such as honesty, heartiness, truthfulness
through participating in Math Camp activities (singing, dancing and team
games)

2. Find out the differences between the “skill” objective as formulated for
teaching geometry and for teaching algebra.

Geometry and Algebra may be both branches of Mathematics

but teaching these two subjects requires formulating of different learning
objectives. Different skills are supposed to be shown by students studying
Geometry and students studying Algebra.
Since the skills required for Geometry are more on constructing figures.

It focusses more on the use of spatial intelligence of the students because it

requires more on the use of visual and logical skills such as drawing figures.
While Algebra requires the use of critical thinking and analytical thinking skills
more. In Algebra students need to be more of a problem solver.
In Geometry, some verbs that can be used are draw, construct, transform
and visualize. In Algebra, verbs that can be used are solve, simplify and
evaluate.
