Comprehensive assessment is not a neutral process. Reflect on what that means and what
kinds of things might constitute an unwanted bias to the assessment process

Based on my understanding, comprehensive assessment is part of the educational system in


which it entails the whole structure in assessing a students’ understanding as a mechanism to
improve teaching and learning. In short, a comprehensive assessment is an evaluation tool or
system that allows teachers to assess students’ overall understanding of the curriculum or skill &
to also boost students’ learning through improved teaching strategies. Comprehensive
assessment is definitely not a neutral process because all teachers are not the same as well as
their students are. Also, under comprehensive assessment is the teaching strategies and lessons
learned by a student which at times engages pressure, unfairness’s, individuality impact on
confidence and many more. Not all students can cope up with some teaching methods, some may
not even like speaking up when asked to recite because they simply do not know or don’t want
to, yet sometimes students are forced to answer a question that they don’t know and are then told
that they did not study well enough. On my opinion that is mortification, which now deteriorates
the student’s psychological position. Students are privileged to study but with respect especially
towards those who have a hard time to cope up with the lessons because they simply just don’t
understand. For me, some teachers may assess a student because of their performance in class,
which then the judgement on that particular student is little, which then gives out a different
comment towards that student. Being a student who is still developing to become mature is not
an easy thing to do. Teachers at times think students think the same, that if one can perfect an
exam why not the others? That’s one point that they have to understand too. That is discernment.
The things that might constitute an unwanted bias towards the assessment process is to pursue
empathy & understanding towards all the students, excelling or not. Increase diversity, and
consciously act, when a student is struggling do not lose your patience or even try to force a
student to learn. Continue to teach and assess if something is being understood or not. Teachers
use multiple strategies to gather and share information about what students understand and
identify where they may be struggling and I believe that is a helpful action to do to reduce the
biasness.
