Project background
The Makerere University-Strengthening Behavioral and Social Science Research (BSSR) Project, is a five year
project, funded by National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institutes of Health on Alcohol Abuse And
Alcoholism (NIAAA), National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and Fogarty International Center (FIC). This
project is part of the Implementation Science (Mak-ImS) capacity building program at the School of Medi-
cine, with a goal to strengthen BSSR leadership and expertise in HIV research at Makerere University to
address the evolving challenges in HIV care and prevention in Uganda. In order to achieve this goal, the
BSSR Project seeks to recruit a highly motivated, dynamic and results-oriented candidate to fill the position
of a Training Coordinator as indicated below;

Job title : Training Coordinator


Required Effort : 50% time effort
Reports to : Principal Investigators through, the Project Coordinator
Duty Station: Makerere University College of Health Sciences, Mulago-Kampala.

Job Purpose: The Training Coordinator will work closely with the project faculty at the College of Health
Sciences, College of Humanities and Social Sciences and other project training sites such as; Makerere
University Joint AIDS Program (MJAP) and Infectious Disease Research Collaboration (IDRC) to ensure that
trainees’ are mentored, tracked and meet their milestones. The Training Coordinator will also work closely
with the Project Coordinator and the administrator. Successful performance in this role will be evidenced by;
trainees completing their training on time and publication of their research work in peer-reviewed journals.

Duties and Responsibilities


• Plan and develop training schedules for workshops and short courses.
• Responsible for ensuring that all trainees’ activities are on track.
• Ensure that trainees are assigned mentors and attend relevant short courses and meetings/symposia.
• Assist trainees to identify side projects within the ongoing HIV projects.
• Coordinate the mentorship of trainees into scientific writing research and presentation.
• Ensure trainees’ research projects are on course and that their Individual development plans are updated
and shared with their mentors.
• Review of trainee reports and manuscripts.
• Coordinate the mentorship of trainees into scientific writing research and presentation.

Required Qualifications; Key Skills


• Masters’ degree in Medicine, Public Health, Clinical • Report writing skills
Epidemiology & Biostatistics, behavioral or social • Computer skills
science field. • Good attention to detail.
• 3-4 years’ experience in HIV Research.
• Methodical and thorough approach to work
• Knowledge or experience in BSSR or Implementa-
tion Science research will be an added advantage. • Organized
