3 Tenets of Success

I know that you’ve found this information sheet because you want to learn to play the
piano. But the truth is you can use this formula and apply it to absolutely anything that
you wish to learn. Whether it’s a language, or how to dance or any other skill you desire
to learn.

1. Do it Every Day.

This simple rule is the most important factor in learning.

When we learn, our brain adapts. If we reinforce those adaptations regularly they will become
prioritized in our mind. By playing the piano every day, even for only a couple of minutes you will
build pathways in your brain that make your future piano learning easier.

2. Seek A Mentor.

A mentor is key to developing your skill in music.

If you learn well from someone, make that person your mentor. If your learning style doesn’t
match their teaching style, find someone else. It’s that simple. If they don’t motivate you to do
more, or if their methods don’t make sense to you, it’s up to you to recognize it and find someone
who can really help you improve.

3. Don’t judge yourself.

This one is the hardest of the three tips, believe it or not.

We have a tendency to judge our efforts as good or bad. Either of these judgements can lead to
slowed progress. If you judge that you’re doing poorly, you’ll be discouraged. Which might
mean that you skip #1. If you judge that you’re doing really well, you might skip over some steps
and leave gaps in your learning and judging that you’re doing well might also lead you to tell
yourself that it’s ok to skip #1 or even #2. Just do it, don’t judge.
