(in case of fuel transfer only).
(5)0nly use explosion proof inspection Lights when performing work.
(6)Comply with safety instructions of electrical power supply chapter.
(7)Any spilled fuel must be absorbed and dried.

B. Hydraulic Fluid
(1)Hydraulic fluids safety precautions
It is forbidden to mix phosphate ester and mineral based hydraulic fluids
when mixed together, these fluids form a jelly in the hydraulic Lines,
thus endangering the aircraft.
As both types of fluid are used, in the hydraulic systems and the
Landing gear shock absorbers respectively, safety precautions must be
observed to avoid inadvertently mixing them.
(2)Precautions to be observed by personnel
(a)Before performing any operation on the hydraulic system or shock
absorbers, personnel should read and throughly understand the following
precautions to be observed when working with hydraulic fluids.
WARNING
----- OBSERVE THE FOLLOWING SAFETY PRECAUTIONS WHEN WORKING ON THE
HYDRAULIC SYSTEMS. LONG EXPOSURE TO HYDRAULIC FLUID CAN CAUSE
SKIN DEHYDRATION AND CHAPPING.
(b)Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before starting work.
(c)Apply barrier cream to hands, wrists and forearms. Rub cream under
fingernails and into creases of skin.
(d)Wear goggles when pressure testing components or systems, and at any
time there is possibility of fluid splashing into eyes.
(e)lf fluid splashes into eyes, treat eyes immediately by irrigating
thoroughly with clear cold water and report the incident.
(f)Wash hands, wrists, and forearms with soap and hot water whenever they
have been in contact with hydraulic fluid.
(g)lf clothing becomes soaked with hydraulic fluid, remove it as soon as
possible, thoroughly wash skin and put on clean clothing.
(3)Technical precautions
(a)Before any maintenance is performed on the hydraulic system,
personnel should read and thoroughly understand the following
precautions. Careful adherence to these instructions will aid in
maintaining a functional and trouble free system.
CAUTION OBSERVE THE FOLLOWING TECHNICAL PRECAUTIONS WHEN WORKING ON
THE HYDRAULIC SYSTEM. HYDRAULIC FLUID WILL ATTACK A WIDE
RANGE OF MATERIALS INCLUDING RUBBER, COPPER, VARIOUS
PLASTICS AND PAINTS.
(b)Ensure that hydraulic fluid does not come into contact with any part
of aircraft outside of the hydraulic system. Keep spillage to an
absolute minimum. Clean up spilled hydraulic fluid immediately to
prevent entry into adjacent areas of the airplane, to prevent future
false hydraulic Leak reports. If spillage occurs, wipe up the fluid
with a dry cloth and wash contaminated area with naphtha, federal
specification P-D-680 (type 1).
(c)When Lines are disconnected and/or components are removed, provide
suitable protection to prevent foreign material from entering the Lines

or components by use of caps or covers.

(d)When electrical connectors are disconnected, install caps or other
suitable protectors to prevent entry of hydraulic fluid, moisture and
foreign objects.
(e)Always check position and angle of all fittings removed from components
to ensure placement and alignment on installation of replacement
components.
(f)When washing metal parts before assembly, use only naphtha, federal
specification P-D-680 (type 1) and ensure that all traces of the
solvent are removed before assembly.
(g)Use only clean hydraulic fluid for flushing or testing hydraulic
components.
(h)Use only clean hydraulic fluid when filling shock absorbers,
reservoirs, sumps, filter bowls, pumps, etc., before installation of
components.
(j)Do not unpack hydraulic fluid a-rings and seals until they are
required, and ensure that only approved rings and seals are used.
(k)When assembling hydraulic system a-rings and seals immediately before
installation :
CAUTION : TAKE SPECIAL CARE TO AVOID CONTAMINATION OF 0-RINGS AFTER
LUBRICATION.
(L)Take care to prevent contamination of hydraulic fluid with other oils,
water or dirt.
(m)lf a system becomes contaminated with any petroleum based oil or
solvent, drain the system and flush with clean phosphate ester based
type IV hydraulic fluid.
(n)Do not pour fluid original container into any other container. Fluid
must be poured from original containers directly into the airplane
system or into the system used for transferring fluid (portable test
stand).
(p)Funnels must be absolutely clean. Do not assume that the finger
strainer in the filler spout will catch all foreign material.
(q)ALL handling equipment must be kept clean, and used for handling
hydraulic fluid only.
(r)Do not expose hydraulic fluid to air Longer than absolutely necessary.
Fluid will absorb dust and grit from the air, and in certain Localities
this constitutes a serious hazard.
(s)Empty containers shall be rendered useless as such, and disposed of as
scrap metal.
(t)Fluid drained from the system shall not be drained into original
containers, but it is to be drained into a container marked
'not for use in hydraulic systems'.

C. Lubrication
WARNING : AVOID LONG OR FREQUENT EXPOSURE TO HYDRAULIC FLUID
- THIS WILL CAUSE SKIN DEHYDRATION
- THIS CAN CAUSE BAD DERMATITIS.
CLEAN HANDS THOROUGHLY WITH SOAP AND WATER BEFORE STARTING WORK.
APPLY A BARRIER CREAM TO HANDS, WRISTS AND FOREARMS.
RUB CREAM UNDER FINGERNAILS AND INTO CREASES OF SKIN.

- a grease gun
- an oil can
- a brush
- a clean Lint-free cloth
- an aerosol spray.
(3)Lubricant specifications
The Lubricant references are given in the List of materials required for
aircraft servicing and maintenance (Ref. AMM-20-31-00).
(4)General requirements
(a)Use only clean Lubricants and tools for Lubrication operations.
(b)Before starting any Lubricating operation, carefully clean the grease
nipple Lubricating holes.
Lubrication must be accomplished immediately.
Check that grease nipples are fitted with ball and spring.
(c)Ensure that the old grease exudes through the pressure relief valves
and on each side of the spherical bearings (unless the quantity of
grease to be used is indicated).
(d)After Lubrication, remove all surplus grease. Wipe the grease nipple
with a clean, Lint-free cloth.
Check that the ball and its spring are in position.

D. De-Icing and Anti Icing Procedure

(1)CAUTION
(a)AIRCRAFT OPERATING UNDER COLD WEATHER CONDITIONS ENCOUNTER PARTICULAR
PROBLEMS CAUSED BY THE FORMATION OR THE PRESENCE OF SNOW, FROST, ICE
AND SLUSH.

(b)IT IS IMPORTANT THAT PERSONNEL BE AWARE OF THE REQUIREMENTS THAT MUST

BE SATISFIED FOR MAINTENANCE IN COLD WEATHER.
IT SHOULD BE REMEMBERED THAT SNOW, ICE OR FROST MUST BE REMOVED FROM
WINGS, STABILIZERS, CONTROL SURFACES AND FLAPS BEFORE TAKE OFF.

(c)THE PERSONNEL PERFORMING THIS OPERATION MUST OBSERVE THE SAVETY

PRECAUTIONS IN FORCE (GLOVES AND SAFETY GOGGLES).
IF DE-ICING FLUID, MATERIAL No. 10-003 (REF. AMM-20-31-00) IS
ACCIDENTALLY SPRAYED ON SKIN, RINSE THOROUGHLY WITH WATER TO AVOID
IRRITATION.
(2)Definition
(a)De-icing consists in eliminating any ice, snow, frost built up on
aircraft surfaces.
NOTE : De icing must be performed as close as possible to plane take-
off.
CAUTION : ICE AND SNOW REMOVAL MUST BE PERFORMED WITH ENGINES STOPPED.
THE AIRCRAFT MUST BE FACING INTO PREVAILING WIND.
(b)Anti icing consists in applying a procedure that will prevent the snow

from adhering or the formation of ice.

The protection provided by an anti icing procedure is dependent on the
protection means and the prevailing weather conditions. Consequently,
only the experience of the operator and/or the airline will allow
forwarding a complete definition.
CAUTION - ANTI ICING CONSISTS IN APPLYING PURE FLUID AND AT AMBIENT
TEMPERATURE.
- ANTI ICING OPERATIONS CAN ONLY BE PERFORMED ON AN AIRCRAFT
PREVIOUSLY CLEARED OF ALL ICING, ICE OR SNOW.
- IF AN EXTRA ANTI ICING TREATMENT IS REQUIRED AFTER PREVIOUS
ANTI ICING, IT IS PROHIBITED TO PERFORM THE NEW ANTI ICING
WITHOUT HAVING WASHED OR DE-ICED THE AIRCRAFT.
- IN THE OPPOSITE CASE, A DRY FILM CAN APPEAR AND MAY NOT BE
BLOWN AWAY BY WIND DURING TAXIING/TAKE-OFF.
(c)As a general rule, de-icing fluids contain products diluted in water.
While anti icing is achieved using pure products.
(3)Equipment and material
De-icing and anti icing systems use the following products
- water
- de-icing fluid
- anti icing fluid
- hot air.
The applicable specific products are Listed in the AMM 20-31-00 Chap. 10
(anti icing and de-icing material).
(4)Methodology
The selection of the type of de-icing system is conditioned by numerous
parameters.
Therefore, only the experience of the operator will direct his choice of
the appropriate method according to the prevailing weather.
The following table provides the basic information to allow the
appropriate means to be determined.
(Ref. Fig. 010 )

E. Tire Inflating
(1)1nflate tires exclusively with nitrogen.
(2)Excess inflation pressure should never be bled off from hot tires.
(3)ALL adjustment to inflation pressure should be performed on tires cooled
to ambient temperature.
(4)1n cold weather check tires carefully for excessive deflection.
NOTE The tire nitrogen pressure will decrease somewhat as the
temperature drops, but excessive deflection could indicate cold
weather nitrogen Leakage at the tire inflation valve or tire
seal ; avoid unnecessary pressure checks.
(5)1f it is necessary to check tire pressure in cold climates, always
apply heat to inflation valve and surrounding areas before unseating
valve seal.
(6)Continue application of heat during reinflation to ensure air valve seal
flexibility when valve closes.
(7)Main gear and nose gear tire pressures are given in accordance with A/C
normal operating take-off weight in order to optimize tire wear (Ref.
Job instruction card 32-41-00 CHK 10010 for tyres pressures).
