Lockdown and time perception

Have you noticed that days seem to get longer? This quarantine

has forced us to stay inside and suspend many activities. Not
only it affects the way we feel, but it also seems
to have some kind of impact on
the way we perceive time. This essay will discuss in detail the toll lockdown
has taken in our minds.

To begin with, how do we tell time has passed? We do it in two ways,

retrospectively meaning that we look back and prospectively how fast time
is passing at the moment. This is of great importance because of
the situation that we are currently in our surroundings do not change as
much they used to. This monotony makes us perceive time as it
were slower at the moment but when we try to remember there are no fixed
dates or events so time itself appears to have shrunk.

Another reason worth discussing is related to

the way we look at time. Do you feel you are moving towards
the future or is it the other way around? I personally feel that we are moving
constantly to a future that is never there because
of course, you can never reach “the future.”

There are some people who find this quarantine unbearable and claim that

they feel as if time itself has been frozen. Despite this, upon asking them to
look back and try to differentiate the days of this isolation, they
are unable to do so and even agree that it seems as no time has passed at
all. This clearly further proves my claim regarding
our estimation of time passage.

All in all, I would like to conclude saying that indeed time perception has

been profoundly altered by these trying times and I particularly did not get
out very much before the mandatory lockdown so it’s not as if I am
missing out on something. But even I can feel the overwhelming effect
it has on us.
