Letter To Judy Greer and Dean Johnsen
Letter To Judy Greer and Dean Johnsen
The chimps living at Project Chimps thanks in part to your generous contributions are
suffering (see photos below), and they need your help.
On May 4th, 2020, twenty-two people who worked for or volunteered at Project Chimps
sent a letter to board president Bruce Wagman to sound the alarm about poor veterinary
care, overcrowding, rushed chimpanzee introductions, a lack of sufficient enrichment
and infrequent access to the outdoor habitat. At Project Chimps, the residents are held
in concrete enclosures for all but 10 hours a week.
When Project Chimps and The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) which
oversees the sanctuary, refused to acknowledge the welfare violations outlined in the
letter, two whistleblowers posted extensive evidence of the mistreatment at
HelpTheChimps.org. On July 9th, National Geographic validated the whistleblower
allegations in an in-depth, investigative story, and, on October 14th, the Nonhuman
Rights Project issued a public statement demanding that Project Chimps provide
residents with daily access to the outdoors.
Because Project Chimps and HSUS won’t listen to us, we are asking you to use your
influence as a donor to compel them to do the following:
1. Replace the Executive Director with someone with extensive chimpanzee experience
2. Hire a veterinarian with proven expertise in primate care
3. Build new outdoor enclosures so that the chimps have daily access to the forest
4. Abstain from bringing in new chimps until these outdoor enclosures are built
We would welcome the opportunity to discuss this further with you, if that would be
helpful.
Sincerely,
