    A fiber optic communication system transmits information using pulses of light through thin strands of glass called optical fibers. It consists of an optical transmitter that converts an electrical signal into light, the optical fiber that carries the light, and an optical receiver that reconverts the light into an electrical signal. Fiber optic communication systems have advantages over traditional copper wire systems including much higher bandwidth and less signal loss over long distances.
