HOME ASSIGNMENT 3

DATE OF ISSUE: 10-11-2020 MARKS:10 DATE OF SUBMISSION: 20-11-2020

1. A concrete pier of a major bridge is rectangular in section with dimensions of 3 m wide by 10 m

in length and a height of 10 m above ground with hemispherical cut and ease waters the top
section is 2 m by 10 m. the dead load from the super structure is 1800 kN from each span
acting at a distance of 0.5 m from the centre line of the pier. The live load reaction from one
span is 1000 kN. Wind pressure on pier is 2 kN/m2. The maximum permissible compressive
stress on concrete pier is 2000 kN/m2. Calculate the stresses developed at the base of the pier
due to a) dead load and self-weight b) Effect of buoyancy c) Eccentricity of live load d) wind
pressure.

2. The concrete abutment of a major bridge has the following dimensions:

Width at top = 1.5 m
Width at foundation level = 3 m
Height of abutment = 4 m
The water face of the abutment is vertical and the earth side is sloping
Live loads acting at the centre of top are 25 KN
Safe bearing capacity of the soil = 200 kN/m2
Density of soil at site = 16 kN/m3
Angle of internal reaction = 300
Compute the stresses developed at the base and check for the stability of the abutment.

3. Design the pier of a major bridge using the following data:

Dimension of pier; Height of pier= 9 m, width at top = 2 m, width at bottom = 3m
Maximum water level = 8 m above base of pier
Girder bearings located at 500 mm from centre of pier on either side
Dead load from each span = 2300 kN
Reaction due to live load on one span = 1000 kN
Maximum mean velocity of current =3 m/sec
Material for pier; M-20 Grade concrete
Live Load: IRC class AA or class A whichever produces the worst effect
Check the adequacy of the dimensions provided by computing the stresses in the pier.

4. The pier of a bridge transmits a total load of 7200 kN at the foundation level. Precast R.C.C
piles 300 mm by 300 mm are proposed for the foundation. Width of pier = 0.9 m and length of
pier = 8.75 m. spacing of piles = 1.75 m. Materials used are M-20 grade concrete and Fe-415
Grade HYSD bars. Hard strata is available at a depth of 5 m below ground level. Design a
typical and a suitable pile cap and sketch the details of reinforcements.

5. A reinforced concrete well foundation is proposed for the pier of a bridge. Design suitable
reinforcements in the well steining using the following data:

Internal diameter of well = 2 m

Type of soil strata (clayey) with constant K=0.033
Depth of well = 24 m
Materials: M-20 Grade concrete; Fe-415 Grade HYSD bars
Sketch the details of reinforcements in well and curb.
