Leadership and management Are all managers leaders? Do all managers have to lead?
Bush (2011 p 5 - 7) states that there are 3 dimensions of educational leadership. What are they?
1. leadership as influence.
2. leadership and values.
3. leadership and vision.
If you had to rank these in order of importance, how would you do so? Discuss.
o Leader and values, vision and as influence. First of all Successful leaders get their values
to achieve their goals and to make their vision clear to influence the people to develop
themselves and the world around them.
Management = Organizing and coordinating actions, in order to reach the set goals.
Administration = "is the range of activities connected with organizing and supervising the
way that an organization or institution functions" (Collins dictionary).
How does Bush (1998) distinguishes between leadership and management? (middle of p 9)
o Leadership: links to values or purpose.
o Management is related to implementation or technical issues.
In the UAE context, how do you think that government school principals are defined in terms of
their roles:
Discuss.
o by the MOE? The school chair implements the Ministry of Education’s decisions because
they don't have the authority over them, which makes them implement the decision.
o by teachers? The school principal listens to the teacher's notes but does not make any
change because it may affect the student’s education level, which means, the student
may have difficulty adapting to a new change that takes a long time.
o by parents? Follow up on complaints that may come from parents and find appropriate
solutions.
o by students? Monitor students' level and ensure that they are on the right path.
