MATH 1210 PIPELINE

PROJECT
Designed & Written by Zac Wood

Reflection:
This was my Math 1210-Calculas 1 project for the semester at SLCC or Salt Lake Community
College. I really have to go and thank my family for listen to me ramble on about this project for
the better part of three day while I struggled through it and I also have to thank my calculator for
be there though it all. This is always the worst part of the class, the project isn’t hard it’s just the
pressure that you put on your self to get through them that makes them so difficult that is the
part that I think is the worst. I love this project this is not exactly what I am going into but it is
sort of the same thing and it was very fun to see the whole thing evolve with each line of math I
wrote. this was a fun time so right now my future looks bright and happy, I hope!

2 GOING ACROSS MR. TOM LEWIS’ PROPERTY

2.1 HEADING A SOUTH EASTERN DIRECTION

(1) heading in a direct path from the pump to the refinery across Mr. Tom Lewis’ land would
be:
(a) An estimated 26.627 miles
(2) The cost of the endeavor would be:
(a) 320,000 per mile

(a) 15miles south on Mr. Tom Lewis’ land
(b) 22 miles east on BLM land
(2) Total millage would be:
(a) 37miles
(3) The cost would be:
(a) 320,000 per mile
(b) 90,000 per mile
(i) Only on Mr. Lewis Property
(c) 320,000(x+y) +90,000(y)=C(x)
(4) Total cost would be:

3 HEADING SOUTH AT SOME ANGLE ACROSS MR. TOM

LEWIS’ PROPERTY TO MEET UP WITH BLM OWNED
LAND

3.1 MEETING IN THE MIDDLE

(1) The total miles on each land:
(a) 14.9894941 miles at S 49d0’28.2238” W (44.98089504 degrees SW from the pump)
on Lewis Land
(b) 21.20613355 miles on BLM land
(2) Total miles:
(a) 36.2 miles
(3) Cost of endeavor:
(a) 320,000 per mile
(b) 90,000 per mile on Lewis Land
(i) For the right of use
(c) 320,000(x) +90,000(y)=C(x)

(4) Total cost:

(a) 320,000(36.2) + 90,000(14.99) = 12,933,100 million dollars US

4 HOW I SOLVED IT
1) Setting it up
a) tan(ϴ)=x/15
i) tan= opposite/adjacent
b) 𝑥2 + 𝑦2 = 𝑑2𝑡
i) 𝑝𝑎𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑔𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑢𝑚 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑜𝑚
ii) x= BLM LAND
iii) y= Lewis Land
c) 𝑦2 = 152 + 𝑥2
i) 𝑦2 = 225 + 𝑥2
ii) 𝑦 = 225 + 𝑥2
2) Plugging it y in
a) 320,000(28 ‒ 𝑥) + 90,000(𝑦) = 𝐶(𝑥)
i) (320,000(28 ‒ 𝑥) + 90,000( 225 + 𝑥2)) = 𝐶(𝑥)
(1) 8960000 ‒ 320,000(𝑥) + 90,000( 225 + 𝑥2) = 𝐶(𝑥)
3) Solving for x
a) 8960000 ‒ 320,000(𝑥) + 90,000( 225 + 𝑥2) = 𝐶(𝑥)
𝑑 𝑑
i) (8960000 ‒ 320,000(𝑥) + 90,000(
𝑑𝑥
225 + 𝑥2)) = 𝑑𝑥(𝐶(𝑥))
‒1

(1) ‒ 320,000 + 90,000 ∗ 2𝑥(225 + 𝑥2) 2 = 𝐶'(𝑥)

‒1

(a) ‒ 320,000 + 180,000𝑥(225 + 𝑥2) 2 = 0

(i) + 320,000
1

(b) 180,000𝑥(225 + 𝑥2) 2 = 320,000
180,000𝑥 320,000
(c) 1 = 1
(255 + 𝑥 ) 2 2

(i) Cross multiply

1

(d) 180,000 = 320,000(225 + 𝑥2)2

(i) Divide by 320,000
1
180,000
(e) = (225 + 𝑥2)2
320,000
(i) Square both sides
180,000 2
1 2
1. ( 320,000 ) = ((255 + 𝑥2)2)
81
(f) 256 = 255 + 𝑥2
(i) 𝑠𝑢𝑏𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑐𝑡 225
(g) ‒ 244.6835938 = 𝑥2
(h) 𝑝𝑢𝑙𝑙 𝑎 ‒ 1 𝑜𝑢𝑡 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑠𝑞𝑢𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑟𝑜𝑜𝑡 𝑏𝑜𝑡ℎ 𝑠𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑠
(i) 244.6835938 = 𝑥2

(i) 14.98944941 = 𝑥
4) Now we insert x
14.99
a) tan 𝜃 = 15
14.99
i) 𝜃 = tan ‒ 1 15
(1) 𝜃 = 44.98089604
b) 𝑦2 = 152 + 14.992
i) 𝑦2 = 449.7001
(1) Sqrt both sides
(a) 𝑦2 = 449.7001
ii) 𝑦 = 21.20613355
(1) y= 21.21
