 Project selection
 not too simple: at least four major equipment
 not too complicated: should be completed by two
terms
 Working hours
 Meet your supervisor
 Work in the library, computer lab and alumni
meeting room
 All team members should be present and visible
during working hours
Term 1
 Definition of the Project (2%)
 Selection of the process and process description (8%)
 Design basis (2%)
 PBD and PFD (7%)
 Material and energy balance (8% and 4%)
 Water, steam, power and effluent balance (12%)

Term 2
 Equipment list and sizing of equipment (18%)
 Mechanical design and P&ID of a major piece of
equipment (13%)
 Plot plan and equipment layout (2%)
 Economic analysis (11%)
 Final report and presentation (17%)
 Plant capacity
 Specification of the raw material(s) and their
sources
 Specification of the product(s)
 Utilities and their sources
 Plant location
 Area
 Literature survey on different Processes
 Describe different processes including their
advantages and disadvantages briefly
 Select your process and justify selection
 Describe the selected process in detail
 Design basis includes site conditions, utility
conditions etc that influence the process design,
the design of individual units, equipment and
the facilities of the overall project
 Geological data
 Utility conditions
 Climatic conditions
 Structural design
 Raw materials
Biodiesel production
Crude oil refinery
How to draw?
 Use appropriate symbols for all vessels,
reactors, columns, mixer, valves, heat
exchanger, cooler, pump, compressor etc
 Number all equipment, valves and streams
 Label the major units
 Using AutoCad / any other drawing tool is
recommended
Benzene Production
 Start with overall material balance
 You are encouraged to use aspen
 You will need to carry out hand calculation
from time to time when aspen does not
provide direct solution and also to cross
check the results
