Zapopan
History of Zapopan

It derives from a Nahuatl pictogram

represented by the zapote fruit tree with a flag
at its side.

The name of Zapopan comes from the Nahuatl

word tzapopantl, "place populated by zapotes".

Zapopan is the second most populated

municipality in Jalisco and is the seventh most
populated in Mexico.
The municipality of Zapopan
represents 1,119% of the
territory of the State of
Jalisco, with an area of 893.15
km2.

It borders to the north with the municipalities of

Tequila, San Cristóbal de la Barranca and
Ixtlahuacán del Río; to the east with the
municipalities of Ixtlahuacán del Río and
Guadalajara; to the south with the municipalities of
Guadalajara, Tlaquepaque, Tlajomulco de Zúñiga
and Tala; to the west with the municipalities of Tala,
Arenal, Amatitán and Tequila.

Speculation

Due to all the situations that are

currently being presented
regarding climate change, we
conclude that in the year 2050
there will be too many
environmental problems which
would put our health at risk and
affect our way of life.
Furthermore, in the future the
world will continue at the same
accelerated rhythm, which
generates a lot of stress and
makes us disconnect from
ourselves and others, as well as
from nature. We stop giving
meaning to life and start only
following patterns.
Enrich

We seek to make a change to

counteract the negative aspects
that are foreseen for humanity or
for the planet in the future. In
addition to raising awareness, we
seek to create empathy with both
nature and human beings.

Bio phil ia
(bahy-oh-fil-ee-uh) noun

A love of life and the living

world; the affinity of human
beings for other life forms.
An innate and genetically
determined love for the
natural world felt
universally by humankind.
Literally bringing nature indoors is the first biophilic
design strategy to restore a healthy and meaningful
connection with nature in interior spaces.
But it is not the only one.

Natural analogues – the second category of biophilic

design patterns – includes indirect strategies that rely
on an analogy with natural shapes and forms.

We are meant to live in nature.”

How do you feel? Calm? Happy?

Such strategies are better explained in the following 3 biophilic design patterns.

Biomorphic forms Material connection Complexity & Order

& patterns with nature
Nature-inspired textures, shapes, patterns.
Biomorphic forms
Natural textures, patterns and shapes are all rich and complex, but
& patterns structured at the same time. They've developed according to incredibly
precise ratios and proportions, quantified with concepts.

The project was inspired by the patterns and shapes of the shapes of
water. This is reflected in the different distributions found in the complex.

Another interesting element to consider is that in nature, curves and

smooth angles are the rule as opposed to straights lines. This can be of
inspiration for the design of the complex, leaving more space for curved,
organic forms.
Natural materials and elements that reflect the local environment in terms of
Material connection ecology or geology.

with nature Nature can be added to the built environment by using natural materials.
These materials are treated in a special way to be used as flooring, wall
treatment, windows treatment, doors, furniture, fabrics and light fixtures.

Natural materials can be especially stimulating, reflecting the dynamic

properties of organic matter in adaptive response to the stresses and
challenges of survival over time (Kellert, 2015). Some natural materials are
imitated perfectly, which gives the same effects.
Rich sensory information recalling natural spatial hierarchies.
Complexity & Order
Natural shapes are full of hierarchies, technically called fractals. A fractal can
be thought of as a never-ending pattern, that repeats itself over and over
again in different scales and sizes.

Complexity provides satisfying settings when it is organized. Complex spaces

tend to be variable and diverse, while organized ones possess attributes of
connection and coherence (Kellert, 2015).
How do you feel? Calm? Happy?

Researches proved that biophilia improves the health and

well-being in the built environment. Greater contact with
natural elements increase productivity, improvement in
learning rates, reduced stress, faster recovery time, and
decreased use of painkillers (Wilson, 2012). As urbanized
spaces are increasing with the population these qualities are
more important. Biophilic designs provides people healthy
and healing spaces to live.
Biophilia effects on humans
Surroundings change

Biophilic architecture is a part of an

innovative view in architecture,
where nature, life and architectural
conjecture merge to create a lively
habitable edifice fit to satisfy the
demands, restrictions and respect
for both people and the
environment.
Practical: By using biophilic designs, designers are providing a good habitat for people to live and advance
their fitness, health and wellbeing. There are certain basic principles to achieve a successful application of
biophilic design. There is certain conditions for these principals to have effective practice.

Repeated and sustained Human adaptations to the Emotional attachment to

engagement with nature natural world (advanced particular settings and places
health, fitness and wellbeing)
Positive interactions between Interconnected and
people and nature: integrated architectural
(relationship and solutions
responsibility for the human
and nature).
The benefits of biophilia
Connection

The connection represents one of the

most consistent concepts of sustainable
building and brings with consideration of
bio-ecologically harmless materials and
the use of renewable energy sources an
enormous increase of quality in planning
and workmanship as well as the living
comfort with itself (Al-musaed, 2011).
Lack of program

After studying the program

and the users; we
highlighted important
points which we integrated
into our project to give
them a solution and
benefit the area.

Such as:
-Green areas

Water shape

One of the important points in the project is to create

empathy and to keep you in the same tune with nature.

The shape of the water gives us key points, such as:

-The shape of the water creates several paths, which we

need for the different circuits that are handled.

-The paths are curved which creates an intrigue for

exploring and walking around the place.

-As you walk along these curved paths your body enters
the movement of the "sea" which brings serenity and
peace.

Greenery is very important

for our landscapes as it
perform a vital role in our
environment and our areas
would be naked without it.

This type of amenity

promotes a connection with
nature because it has large
green areas.

Although plants provide

humans with fruits,
vegetables, and many other
products, it is a vital factor
of balancing the nature and
the environment.

For this reason we include

these urban gardens within
the complex as they are a
fundamental part of the
biophilic connection.
+
Lakes

Water is essential for

humans lives.
Many researches proved
that the presence of water
heals. In addition, humans
enjoy seeing, listening and
feeling the water in their
spaces. Water plays a big
role in people's lives as the
body is made up of 60% of
water and the earth's
surface of 70%.

Green areas shows
tranquility, health, jealousy,
and good luck.
Environments dominated by
plants, on the other hand,
are less complex and have
patterns that reduce arousa

feelings of stress
(Al-musaed, 2006). Green
improves reading abilities
and fertility as well. People
who take care of green

Green walls

Green walls are

attractive indoor and

In biophilia green walls

are used as air filtration

space. They can be used
as partitions and sound
absorption as well.
Trees Placement

•Shade trees do affect summer time

electricity use, but the amount of the
savings depends on the location of the
tree. (Al-musaed, 2011)

•Trees planted within 12 m of the south

side or within 18m of the west, side of the
building will generate about the same
amount of energy savings. This is because
of the way shadows fall at different times
of the day (Eames,1961).

• A tree planted on the west side of a

building can reduce net carbon emissions
from summertime electricity use by 30
percent over a 100-year period (Eames,
More trees in the southwest 1961).

Color

There are different perspectives of different researches

approaching biophilia. One of these perspectives is the
eight points of biophilic effect that is drawn by Nikos
Salingaros, Biophilia and Healing Environment(Healthy
Principles for Designing the Built World). Color is one of
the biophilic points that contributes with the humans
experience.
Color perception

Pigmentation of partial intensity but overall harmony

generates a healthy effect. Color perception is one of
our senses (including receptors in our eyes and
processing pathways in our brain) that links directly with
our emotions. Humans evolved in natural light that
ranges in coloration from red to orange to blue,
depending upon the time of day. This describes the hue
of incident light.

The color of plants, animals, rocks, etc., formed our

preference of colors in the environment. We experience
color both in the transmitted quality of light and as
reflected from pigmented surfaces.
Color psychology

The psychological effects of color run deep, and they

are used (and abused) extensively by the advertising
industry. Interior designers employ colors and color
harmonies to affect people’s psychological mood. Gray,
colorless surroundings are associated by our mind’s eye
with illness, decomposition, and death (Salingaros, 2006:
Chapter 4).

How it works

Photoplethysmography

With this method the volume of a body can be

known, establishing the amount of light it
reflects. It can provide the heart rate value
through the recording and analysis of an optical
source signal.

Emotion sensors that can recognize basic

emotions through movements, such as fear or
anger, as well as confusion, interest, and
concentration.

The conductivity sensors of the skin detect when

a person is in a situation of stress or a change
because when this happens sweating is
generated and through this sensor the necklace Display
is able to detect it.
How it works

Silicone shell

Silicone is made from the combination of silicon,

a hard and brittle crystalline solid, oxygen, and
elements such as hydrogen and carbon.

What makes silicone so versatile is that it can be

made into different consistencies, such as to
become a gel, rubbery in texture, or hard like a
rock. Silicone products are generally better than
plastic. This is because they are more durable
than plastic and better for the environment.

With silicone rubber and chemicals the necklace

can change depending on the user's humor,
emotion, feelings.
Silicone shell
How it works
Our intention is to connect user to user through empathy. Using the sensors as a transport that
knows both of them perfectly; it focuses on the "colors" that the user is transmitting.

The mother database of intelligence of the set stores all the data received during the day from
the users and changes the lights of the amenities, depending on which is the most predominant
(always reflecting the positive).

It´s purpose is to highlight the main concept "biophilia" which is to connect humans with nature to
improve well-being.

“The most beautiful thing in
the world is when you
connect with someone on a
higher level.”
“We often forget that we are
nature. Nature is not
something separate from us.
So when we say that we have
lost our connection to
nature, we have lost our
connection to ourselves.”
- Andy Goldsworthy

“Souls recognize each other

by vibes, not by
appearances.”
Returning to our speculation, we realize how humans are facing a huge problem in how to maintain
and establish environments that are ecologically sustainable and supports their health. Now day´s
humans are living in eras with degrading of natural resources, global climate change, loss of
biodiversity and more unknown effects. Green is a cool color which symbolizes nature and natural
life.

Our biology should dictate the design of the physical settings we inhabit. As human beings, we need
to connect with living structures in our environment. To have a promising future we should be more
aware of the risks that we are living in and take into consideration biophilia, humans and the
connections.
To connect our project with biophilia, the best way was to relate it to the three ways of connecting
with nature (outdoor, indoor and indirect contact) since the objective is to eliminate stress and
anxiety and thus increase empathy between living beings and nature, this is achieved by keeping
attention connected to nature.

Working toward this goal all the development was done in relation to that:

-The outdoor provides places where people can coexist, enjoy and appreciate the nature around
them. Trying to unite society in a healthy, safe and productive way.

-The indoor is a way to bring nature to your comfort zone, so that the transition from outside to
inside does not break with the context that the user is feeling.

-The indirect is a way to make stronger the bond of empathy between people. Having a relationship
with the "color", factor where contribute to the biophilic effect experienced by human beings.

The hope is that with greater comprehension and contextualization of the relationships between
nature and human health, more thoughtful biophilic design solutions will emerge.
