What are Glass Partitions?

Glass partitions or (glass partition walls) are high-quality, non load-bearing panes of
glass that function as room dividers. Glass partition walls are great for opening up a
room and creating open, airy work environments. Partition wall systems are typically full
glass (ceiling to wall) partitions. Aluminium frames or other mounting hardware hold
these systems in place.

As a building material, this interior glass allows designers and architects to divide a
room, without sacrificing floor space and light diffusion. Glass partition walls are ideal
for creating comfortable and practical office working environments. When you allow
natural light to flow into a given space, it changes how shapes, colours, patterns,
textures and people interact. Glass partition walls are also one of the simplest ways to
update an office or commercial space.

These glazing systems systems are gaining in popularity over traditional drywall
installations. Interior designers and architects both appreciate these glass wall systems
for their scalability and translucent properties.

The proverbial glass ceiling could be after all a real idea of improving the outlook of
our buildings. There are structures now that have complete glass ceilings with
swimming pools on top that you can see the water from below. There are just a few of
such outrageous designs around the world, but they look cool and beautiful. What is
common now, and quickly replacing stone and cardboard walls are glass walls. Top
commercial contractors have specialized in the art of constructing and designing such
office spaces and highly recommend most offices to follow suit. But these designs
come with their pros and cons. Here are some of them.
Glass Partition Wall Design Advantages:
• Glass partition wall systems are over time often more affordable than traditional
building materials like drywall.
• These commercial glass systems are scalable.
• You can reconfigure and move glass partition walls to accommodate a wide
array of needs.
• As compared to sheetrock, glass partitions are a less permanent and more
mobile solution.
• Given their opacity, glass walls allow natural light into a work space.
• Frameless glass walls reduce your need for additional lighting.
• Glass partition walls obviously afford greater transparency.
• Customers, clients and employees all appreciate seeing who they’re working
with.
• Partition walls create a greater feeling of openness and connectivity.

Glass Partition Wall Design Disadvantages:

• Reduced Privacy
• More distractions
• A feeling of Being on Display

Glass wall systems are highly customizable

with regard to:
• Appearance of the glass
• Type of glass
• Frameless or framed construction
• Configuration of the various panels and doors
• Number of doors
• Frameless or framed door panels
• Swinging or sliding door motion
Appearance of the glass:
• Patterned glass

As the name suggests, patterned glass has a decorative design embossed on its
surface. It could be a colourful geometric pattern, or just a plain texture. It is most
useful in spaces which require privacy but also need sufficient light transmission. The
texture on the glass surface prevents a clear view of the object when seen through the
glass. It has its applications in conference rooms, foyers, restaurants, shower cubes, and
windows

• Tinted glass

Tinted glass is manufactured by adding metal oxides to float glass. Different metal
oxides when mixed with float glass, render different colours to it. There is not much
change in the elementary properties of the glass, except the solar transmission. Due to
its tint it prevents heat transmission and absorbs solar energy. This is not ideal glass if
you desire to transmit light since it hinders with light transmission.

• Satin glass

It is chemically treated to give the desired finish on the surface. It is a good material for
decorative purposes. It can also be used as a partition wall in retail spaces or hotels
where one requires privacy as it blurs the view. Due to this property it can be utilized in
fabricating a door in association with another material such as wood. Satin glass is a
low maintenance product as it prevents the dust from sticking on to its surface. The
finger marks don’t get printed on the skin of stained glass unlike another glasses.

• Clear glass

Clear glass is the most common type of glass seen in interior spaces. It is colourless and
has blue or green coloured edge due to the presence of iron oxides. It is not as strong
as laminated glass. It allows almost 80-90% of the visible light to pass through.

Frosted glass

In technical terms, frosted glass is a clear sheet of glass that is turned opaque through
the process of sandblasting or acid etching. Because of light scattering during
transmission, the glass comes out as translucent, obscuring visibility even as it transmits
light.
Type of glass
Glass partitions for offices and interiors can be manufactured in a variety of glass types
such as acoustic, fire-rated, frosted and toughened glass. They can also be enhanced
with bespoke graphics or ironmongery to complement user’s interior scheme and
branding.

Frameless or framed construction

• Framed Glass Walls - The Standard

Framed configurations are what most people would typically think of when they hear
the term “glass wall.” They consist of lites—panels of glass—reinforced with metal
beams that provide maximum sound insulation and security.

• Frameless Glass Walls - The Most Aesthetically Appealing Option

Frameless glass walls are a clean, minimalist option often favored by architects who
want a modern aesthetic. Large panes are attached to the ceiling and floor with
hardware that’s unobtrusive or invisible to the casual observer. These are called
“frameless” because there are no supports on the sides of the glass—only at the top
and bottom.
