LEARNING INPUT
Different Reading Styles
Scanning is an efficient reading strategy in which the reader finds a specific fact or information
quickly from within an enormous amount of text. In this technique, a reader can skip reading or
understanding a large bulk of information or facts, and concentrate only on looking for the specific
information that he or she needs. This is useful in looking for specific data like names, dates, statistics, or
facts without having to read an entire article.
If scanning is looking only for specific information in the fastest possible way, skimming, on the other
hand requires the reader to get a general overview and the main ideas of a text or material swiftly
going over the content of a text.
The following are some steps in skimming a material or article:
1. Read the title and the introductory paragraph completely.
2. Read each subheading to see the relationship in each of them.
3. Read the first sentence of the remaining paragraphs.
4. Read the entire final paragraph.
5. Be on the lookout for clue words:
a. Question words that answer who, what, when, why, and how.
1
b. Proper nouns
c. Uncommon words especially if they are capitalized
d. Descriptive/Qualifying adjectives
e. Typeface marks – boldface, italics, asterisks, and underlining

Close reading or serious reading enables you to extract detailed information, to note the sequence of
events, and to be aware of patterns, similarities, comparisons, and contrasts. This kind of in-depth reading
hones our thinking skills. It enables you to start formulating conclusions and interpretations based on facts and
details you gathered from the material you read.

Folk Dances in the Philippines

Folk dancing and singing were very popular among the ancient Filipinos.
History relates that when Magellan reached the Philippines on March 17, 1521, he
was entertained by dancing native girls while young men payed on what were
thought to be “crude” musical instruments. These ancient musical instruments
probably appeared crude to the Spaniards who were not familiar with them.
Through centuries, Filipinos have shown a great fondness for a great ability
in dancing and singing. They dance practically in every occasion – birth,
thanksgiving, love, war, victory, marriage, and eve death. They dance to patron
saints and likewise to the birds found in the rice fields. Ceremonial dances are
performed during town fiestas honoring patron saints and religious events like Ash
Wednesday, Easter, and Christmas.
