The bird-seller of the title is Adam, who mistakenly believes that his girlfriend, Christel,
is dallying with a visiting prince when she’s only trying to secure a job for Adam. The
“prince” is actually the scoundrel Stanislaus in disguise, hoping to pick up a purse from
the royal hunting match and a girl to go with it. Also in disguise is the real prince’s wife,
Marie, who is trying to track down her philandering husband.

Story of a boyish Tyrolean birdseller, Adam, who is anxious to marry Christel, the village
postmistress of a neighbouring town. She goes to the local prince to secure for him the
post of ROyal Menagerie Keeper, but does not know that His Highness is being
impersonated by a swindler and ladies’ man, Count Stanislaus. In cahoots with his
corrupt uncle, Baron Weps, Stanislaus needs to raise cash to pay off his gambling debts.
The old COuntess Adelaide expresses her desire to marry (and pay the debts of)
Stanislaus. He is reluctant, but realizes he doesn’t have an alternative.
Thereafter, Adam, unaware of Christel's good intentions, is furious when he finds out
she has been in the pavillion, alone with the supposed prince. To complicate matters,
the actual Princess, disguised as the peasant girl Marie offers depressed Adam her own
flowers. He reminds her that in the Tyrol this means a love pledge. Though she is
faithful to her husband, the Princess enjoys flirtation.
Later, following an examination by Baron Weps and two oddball professors, Adam is
offered the Head Bird Keeper position. Despite Christel’s innocence, Adam decides that
she should marry the treacherous Count Stanislaus, whose identity has been revealed.
She resists and pleads her case to both the Princess and Countess Adelaide. Thanks to
the generous intercession by the real Prince Karl and his wife, complications are sorted
out in the end, Stanislaus is pardoned for his shenanigans, Adelaide is paired with Baron
Weps and Christel is happily reunited with Adam.

Character of Christel:
Post master’s daughter
One of the nicest girl in the village

Character of Adam:
