1. 1000 Kg of crushed oil seed (20% oil, 80% meal ) is extracted with 2000 Kg of 'pure' hexane in a
batch extraction vessel. Calculate the fraction of the oil extracted using

2. In above problem instead of using the solvent at one time, the process was carried out in two-
stage cross-current unit using half of the solvent (i.e. 1000 kg ) in each stage. Using same
equilibrium data, calculate the fraction of oil that can be extracted. Compare and comment on the
results of 1-stage and 2- stage process.
