CVL 740 - Pavement Materials and Design of Pavements


2020 -- 2021

Time and Location: Monday, Thursday 5:00 PM – 6.30 AM

Course Objectives:
1. Discuss fundamental characteristics and properties of bituminous materials (at individual component
and mixture level),
2. Understand complexity of asphalt concrete behavior and compare various types mix design methods,
3. Describe construction methods, equipment used in production and placement of asphalt concrete,
4. To develop a basic understanding of the behavior of layered media under action of vehicles, climate,
5. Understand basic design philosophy of flexible and rigid pavements for highways, and to be able to
use current software’s to design such structures.

Tentative Topics:
General Introduction: Terminology; Historical developments; Sources and refining processes.
Asphalt Cement: Manufactured materials - Asphalt cement, Cutbacks, Emulsions; Properties of asphalt -
Physical, Rheological.
Asphalt Cement: Testing procedures; Asphalt cement grading systems.
Aggregates: Production and stockpiling; Properties, Quality and testing; Aggregate size, Gradation and
blending; Quality control.
Asphalt Concrete Mix Design: Fundamentals of mix design procedure; Volumetrics; Marshall mix
design method; Superpave mix design method.
HMA Production Facilities: Types of Production Facilities—Batch plants, Drum plants.
HMA Construction Practices: HMA Transportation and Field Operations—Hauling; Laydown
operations; Compaction.
Components of Pavement Structure: Terminology; Historical developments.
Structural Behavior of Pavements: Stresses and strains in flexible pavements; Stresses and deflections
in rigid pavements; Analysis of traffic loading for pavement design.
Pavement design: Design of flexible pavements; Design of rigid pavements; Relavent Indian and
international standards.

Grading Policy:
Final Grade = !(Minor 20% + Major 25% + Term Paper 25% + Viva and Homework 20% + Class
participation 10%). Absolute or relative grading will be done as per the discretion of the instructor at the
end of semester.
Research Project:
You are expected to work on a topic that won’t be explicitly covered in this course. The work includes (i)
Literature review of state-of-the-art based on 15-25 research articles published in international journals,
(ii) Preparation of ~10 page research article, and (iii) Delivery of 10 minute presentation on the topic.
Exact details will be discussed later.
Attendance Policy:
You are strongly encouraged to attend all classes. Any penalty for attendance shortage will be as per
institute policy. Active participation in class is encouraged.
Externalities:
In case of any issue pertinent to class (like missing deadlines, etc. (but not limited to) shall be brought to
instructor’s notice before hand or immediately after occurrence. If such issue is not brought to instructor’s
notice within reasonable time, the same shall not be considered in any course component.
Academic Integrity:
You should work on all course evaluation component independently (unless specified). Scholarly conduct
is expected in all work related to course. Any deviation from scholarly conducts (but not limited to
cheating, plagiarism) will be addressed appropriately.

Any document to be submitted (including homework, term paper report, term paper presentation)
has to be emailed to akswamy.iitd@gmail.com with a carbon copy to akswamy@civil.iitd.ac.in.

Etiquette during online classes

1. Participants are responsible for muting themselves, so that they do not disturb the class.

2. In some situations, you may asked by instructor to turn on your video. Therefore,
you should be in proper attire during all class hours (Similar to requirement during
physical classroom instruction).

3. In a video lecture, if/when you turn on your video should ensure that the background
remains appropriate.

4. All participants have the responsibility for creating the boundaries of their private lives.

5. Participants must use appropriate language (not derogatory or discriminatory to any


individual or group) at all times they are connected for an online class.
