Universal Design for Learning: Luckily, we live in a very technology-based society. With this lesson, all
students will have access to the technology needed to create a video to explain Mitosis, to me the teacher.
The students will get to pick how they want to present this video to me, there is not a set platform they have
to choose, but they will have to make sure it is approved by the county to use. With offering different ways to
present the material, all learners can be successful and show their creative side. Their projects can be as
basic, as a typical voice-over PowerPoint, or the students acting out mitosis. This project really covers the
“How” of learning. Students can show what they know in any way, as long as they cover everything on the
rubric. There will be plenty of time to work on this assignment in class, and students will be able to work in
pairs, or alone, whichever they choose. By allowing class time, it relieves the stress of students working at
home, and eliminates the stress for the students who may not have access to a computer or internet at
home.
Lesson idea implementation: The students will be creating a video to explain mitosis. The project is based on
the students being the teacher and teaching me what they know about mitosis. The students will have class
time to create a video explaining mitosis, in any way they feel fit. They can act it out, make a news story, or
pretend they are lecturing over the topic. The project will be introduced through a video, which is attached on
this page. The project should take them no longer than a period and a half to complete, with block schedule,
this should be plenty of time. I want to make sure students have enough time to complete in class, so they do
not have to work on it at home, without the resources of the classroom. Student learning will be assessed
through rubric style grading. They will be graded on creativity, accuracy of the content, and group
participation.
The final product will be used as a form of review, as students will not be taking an exam over mitosis.
This will count as a half summative grade, and they will see exam questions over mitosis on their midterm

exam. This project gives students the opportunity to be creative and have a summative grade that is not an
exam, which for most, benefits them. The students will be creating a product, and that helps extend to higher
Blooms Taxonomy levels and LoTi levels. As the teacher, I will be a resource throughout the project days.
Students can run ideas by me, ask me questions about the video editing process, and more. Students will be
able to present their project to the class if they’d like, and I will be giving feedback through their
presentations and on the project rubric.
Importance of technology: The multimedia authoring tool allows for students to create their own product
that can be shared with the class, and others. The project could be altered to not use this technology, but that
would decrease the creativity and the excitement behind the project idea. There can be other technology
used in the project, if they choose to use it, like audio, presentations, pictures, and more.

Inspiration (optional): I did not really use any previous multimedia projects to inspire this project, but I did
use the idea to have the students play the role as the teacher, to show what they know about the material.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy: Some possible internet safety surrounding this project would be the
students publishing their projects to a site that is public and anyone could see it. To minimize the risk, I would
inform the students on how to make a video private, and to where only people with the link could watch the
video. Some publishing sites even let your password protect your videos. To alleviate any fears, I would let the
students have the option of publishing their work, or if they do not feel comfortable, they can just submit
their video through a drop box, so only I and the class will see the video. I know how important it is to protect
my students, and following internet and safety guidelines, so I could also talk with the technology specialist at
my school and make sure everything we are doing is safe, and appropriate.
Reflective Practice: This project allows for students to create their own product that opens a door for
creativity, and self-expression, two things that are often lost in a science classroom. With this project students
are able to show what they have learned about the material and share with the class. In the future I would
like to try out smaller video projects, like Flip grid throughout the semester to get students comfortable with
video making, and sharing their thoughts.
