Narrative Essay

As the 2nd semester starts, we immediately start the orientation, the do and don’ts
inside the classroom and at the same time the requirements to be pass at the end of the
semester. We’ve discussed a lot of topics such as sequencing, cause and effect, comparison
and contrast, getting the main idea, summarizing, fact and opinion, author’s purpose, making
inferences, drawing conclusion and figurative language.

The first topic that we had discussed is sequencing. Sequencing enables the reader to
be guided on the sequences of the events and to avoid confusion on what they are reading.
The second and third topics are cause and effect, and compare and contrast. Cause and effect
guides the readers in understanding why did it happen and what makes it happen while the
compare and contrast enables us to determine the similarities and the differences of a person
or things. Every after discussion of each topic there is an activity given by the book and we
are required to answer it in our remaining time in the classroom. After these three topics was
discussed, our teacher conduct an examination to assess our understanding on these topics.

The fourth is getting the main idea. Getting the main idea is an essential skill for it
guides the readers what is the paragraph all about. Usually, it is places at the beginning of the
paragraph. But there are instances that it is found at the middle or at the end of the paragraph.
Summarizing is our fifth topic as we were asked to summarize the long statement and the
thought or idea of the statement will still remain. This topic is difficult for me because it
requires us to summarize a statement with the same thought of the long statement in it and at
the same time it confuses me if the words I used will still fit in the idea. Every wrong words
use will change the thought of the statements.

The sixth and seventh topics are facts and opinion, and author’s purpose. Facts and
opinion enables readers to identify facts from an opinion while author’s purpose is how the
authors deliver their information or statements in the audience or readers, is it to persuade, to
inform and to entertain their readers. Making inferences is our 8 th topic which requires us to
give our own understanding in the given scenario or picture. Our 9th and 10th topics are
drawing conclusion and figurative language. Drawing conclusion is using information that is
implied or inferred to make meaning out of what is not clearly stated. While figurative
language uses figures of speech that is used either spoken or written. After all we finished our
book, our teacher asked us to memorise “Invictus” as it serves as our exam. After that, we
practice our reading skills by reading those materials given by our teacher.

Overall, these whole semester have been a journey in so many ways. I have grown as
a person and also as a work in progress writer as we always do essays. Our teacher has truly
inspired me to be a lifelong learner. For me, to be a lifelong learner would not be complete
without the reading to encounter new information and ideas and also the writing in which to
engage, muddle through, digest, and recreate everything in my own understanding.
