In “More than 150 countries use torture”, Jessica Williams states, “[Between] 1998 and 2000,

more than 150 governments allowed torture to be carried out in their countries. Many people think of

torture as an inhumane way getting information. When an entire government gives the “okay” for

officials to inflict intense physical and psychological pain on others, it’s bound to spawn a few hundred

protestors out there. Personally, I have mixed feelings about it. In spite of all the inhumane ways that

intelligence agencies use to extract information from terrorists, in the current world we live in, it’s not

hard to see why some people are willing to do anything to keep citizens safe. The September 11 attack

is what it took for “the CIA [to up] its game, employing what was known...as “operational flexibility” in

its handling of suspects” (131). The responsibility of protecting an entire nation doesn’t leave many

people with the luxury to be “humane”.
