The second time I write to my lord and father. I don’t know if you received my
letter. And in it we, though unworthy, said a little of what time required and
what we could do; and now we say what follows and what God will give to the
benet of my humble soul, and also, I dare say, to the comfort of your father,
your generosity. As before often, and now, I say and confess that if I have any
gift of words and the ability to write at
least something small, then this is not given for me, your humiliated servant,
but for you, who have plenty grace owing in your heart. Therefore, you
willingly and joyfully continue to teach and admonish not only us, whom
others mistakenly consider your nephews, but also all
your sons and children born of your spirit. And the fact that I am telling the
truth is proved by your deeds. You are a true shepherd who laid down
“a soul for his sheep” (John 10: 11–12), so that we do not shy away from the
truth and are ready now to willingly shed our own blood. Such is the vigilance
of a true shepherd, convicting liars and truly worthy of God, the Father and
the Archpastor! So, this very bestowed for me for your sake I bring to you very
meagerly, and you reap these, I do not know how to say, the skinny fruits of
the seeds that you sowed with care and plentifully, like a good farmer. What
can I say to your holy soul that is decent and respectable, my dear father? Who
has excommunicated me from your always coveted face, from a sweet
conversation, from a saving leadership? You are my light, always a shining
lamp in the midst of gloomy spiritual thoughts, a rod that strengthens the
weakness of my heart, changes discouragement into cheerfulness, evangelism,
joy, anointing, festivity, glory. Without you, the sun is not joyful to me; I
would rather not see the light than not see your image. There is nothing
pleasant for me on earth without your presence; for what is more desirable
than the presence of a true father, even in the sight of God? This is known by a
son who loves his father and is truly dear. But why are there many words?
Now I’ll tell you what happened to me. Often, when I did not intend to go to
your holy cell, then imperceptibly, as if drawn by someone, I would come to
you, stand in front of your face, so often when you asked: “Why did you
come?” – I could not answer anything. My salvation depended on you so
much! Who does not strive for light? But I thank God, for whose sake I have
been torn away from you by the hands of those who blasphemed His law and
were born of those like them. May the Lord God my do not blame them for this
sin, but may it lead them to the realization of recklessness, and may they be
left without an answer for it. You were imprisoned, as we heard, in a cramped
hut, but in this way they showed you as a resident of heaven. After all, they
detained the treasure of the confession of God and did not understand what they
did. If they had seen, they could have known from this that they made you
venerable among people who could save in the world and be longed for by
many. You accepted dishonor and insults with Christ, you were persecuted,
like this blessed one. Thy sheep were scattered, for they struck you, a
shepherd, as Christ. Although it is bold to say, these are His words: “If they
persecuted Me, they will also persecute you” (John 15:20), and the
others who followed Him suer the same suerings with Him. “If only we
suer with Him,” says the great Paul, “then we will also be gloried with Him”
(Rom. 8:17). And so it is. But to me, indecent and unworthy, but through your
holy prayers, the righteous father, the Compassionate Lord granted me the
comfort of being with you in spirit, for I constantly see you, talk with you,
receive blessings, use your protection, give and receive information for
conrmation the confession that you professed. It seems to me that I hear the
words uttered in your intelligible voice: “Humble Theodore, we truly suer
little, while God gives great hope.” This is comfort and joy for me. Do not be
afraid, father, for me, your slave and completely outcast. Truly, I am a rabble
for heaven and earth, and cooled with my soul more than any man. However, I
dare to speak as having good hope, although unworthy, looking up to heaven,
strengthened by your intercession, not being exalted by what I suered, but
reproaching myself for not tolerating courageously and not properly, but little
and easily compared to the life-giving suering of the saints. For I read about
many of these martyrdom deeds described in twelve books, so my heart
trembled, and I dare not say that I suered anything for the sake of Christ. And
what is more desirable, father, I remind you, like a slave, of suering for His
sake? Look up father; look at the Lord, imagine the faces of the Angels,
imagine the host of saints, behold the Judge of the world sitting on the highly
exalted throne, Who will proclaim you to be a faithful slave, the keeper of His
commandments and, even more, a confessor. Where will he send you later?
Not into the eternal re, which accepts those who do not submit to His law,
but to the life-giving abode, to immortal peace, to innite joy. “Enter,” he will
say, “in the joy of your Lord” (Matthew 25:23). All of us look at you, we are all
strong in spirit when you stand rm. May God’s help be ever more with you,
protecting you, strengthening you, conrming you, encouraging you! Fearing
God, do not be afraid of the “what” the “man” has done to you, or perhaps he
will do (Psalm 117: 6). You rely “on the Lord”, you are “Mount Zion”, you will
not move “forever” (Ps. 124: 1), for the Founder and Creator of the higher
Jerusalem dwells in you. Run away from poisonous and seductive speeches
that tempt you like snakes and want to remove you from the life-giving tree
of truth, and once established yourself in the truth, established yourself to perfect
steadfastness on many testimonies of the Holy Scriptures, and partly from godly
people, be careful that you to receive praise, which is contained in the
following dictum: “He who does so will not be shaken forever” (Ps. 14: 5). The
brothers are all healthy: Mr. Deacon, my father, my dear brother, and he is
now even more worthy of love, and my other beloved and honorable brothers
and your children. Pray for them all together with me, father. They all make a
good ow; they only wish for your health in the Lord, and everything that they
endure is easily tolerated. Of course, we grieve, and lament, and miss, and
become discouraged, and have many vicious thoughts, for it is impossible to
live a real life without sorrows, but we are strengthened by hope and your
prayers. Pray for me, father, for I am studying Saint Isaiah, and tell me if you
want me to read letters, besides writing.
