FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT VS RIGID PAVEMENT

The floors are divided into flexible and rigid

FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT

It is a folder made of an asphalt mixture, which is the bearing surface; it directly

supports the weight of traffic and provides functional and structural characteristics.
The mat absorbs the horizontal and part of the vertical forces, since the loads of the
vehicles are distributed towards the lower layers by means of the friction and cohesion
characteristics of the material particles.
The asphalt mat folds to small deformations of the lower layers without the structure
breaking.
The layers that form a flexible pavement are. asphalt layer, base and sub-base, which
are built on the subgrade layer.

RIGID PAVEMENT

The rolling surface of a rigid pavement is provided by concrete slabs, which distribute
vehicle loads to the lower layers throughout the entire slab surface. Due to their
rigidity, they distribute vertical loads over a large area and with very low pressures.

This type of pavement cannot bend to the deformations of the lower layers without
structural failure.

It is this point of view that influences rigid pavement calculation systems, because the
systems combine the thickness and strength of concrete slabs.

The cross section of a rigid pavement is constituted by the concrete slab and the sub-
base, which are built on the layer subgrade.
FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT RIGID PAVEMENT
 Initial construction cost is low  Initial construction cost is high
 The lifespan of flexible pavement is  The lifespan of flexible pavement is
approximately 15 years approximately 30 years
 Repair work is simple  Repair work is complex
 Maintenance cost is high  Maintenance cost is low
 The tread layer is asphalt  The tread layer is concrete

 Initial cost is lower than rigid pavement

 The lifespan of rigid pavement is longer than flexible pavement
 Repair work is simpler than pavement rigid
 The cost of maintenance is higher than rigid pavement

CONCLUSION

From the above differences, our winner is rigid pavement because rigid pavement is
durability and low maintenance cost. Rigid pavement is double or triple more durable
than flexible pavement which makes it very economical in long term view
