_DEG_ CHAPTER 1

1 DESCRIPTION OF THE INSTRUMENT

1.1 Generalities

The instrument DEG 2 grants easy control over stringing operations. A wide graphical display collects the main
data monitored by the sensors mounted on the machine: actual pulling/tensioning force and speed, and cable
length. The instrument also let you set and modify on the fly a force limit: on reaching that limit, an alarm signal
is sent to the machine.

1.2 Versions

The instrument comes in two different versions: V and M.

M-version adds the capability to store in memory the data displayed, altogether with some details inputted by the
user. After, the saved data can be recalled for being redisplayed, printed or saved on a memory card for being
transferred to a personal computer.

4.2 Force limit

The work force limit is the limit reaching which the instrument send an alarm signal to the machine. The way the
alarm is managed (from acoustical alarm to the complete stop of the engine) depends from the machine itself.
The force limit (max force) can also be modified from the Working page by pressing [UP] and [DOWN] keys.

4.3 Mode of use

If the instrument is mounted on a machine that can work either as puller or tensioner, you should set, before
every session of work, the mode you are using the machine. This selection determines the way the cable length is
measured: in Puller use, the cable length is increased when winded up, and decreased when released; the
opposite in Tensioner mode.

Each block of memory can contain up to 4000 samples. According to the length of the span to do, can be useful
to adjust the sampling frequency in order to reduce the number of samples for storing all them together in one
solo block.

avoid that situation, use higher sample frequency (Sample every...) or split the working session in two or
more recording sessions.

[1] While recording, the record number id displayed instead of the hours of work

5.1.5 How to split a working session in two or more recording sessions

When the memory slot is quite full (90% or more), the instrument signals the situation by showing the
percentage used of space. At this point, we recommend to stop the current recording session, and start a new one,
as follows:
stop temporary the working session
take note of the cable length
press [OK] to stop the recording session, and access the menu
select New record
input Place, Operator, Cable name and Sample every…, confirming the previous values
set the Starting point with the length previously noted

This procedure permits to augment temporarily the max limit set. The operation could be dangerous and it is
generally forbidden. It is allowed only during pipe-renewal operations, if the following conditions are
verified:
 the puller is used to pull a pipe inside a horizontal conduit
 the pipe jams in the conduit, and the puller reaches the max force
 the safety devices block the capstans impeding to release the rope

In this case, you can raise temporarily the force limit to unlock the alarm situation, with the only purpose of
releasing the rope (and not for pulling more), and freeing the pipe.
To raise the work limit over the max limit, press contemporary the keys [ESC] and [UP] and keep them. The max
allowed raise is determined by the parameter Augment the limit % in the menu Machine settings, as a
