Unit 2 Review Name: ______________________________

Things to consider…

1. Have you looked at old AP tests? – The correct way is to take the test problems and then check your
work. Whatever you get wrong ask Mr. Bear or figure it out. Look for commonalities.

2. Look at the CED documents attached to this review- make sure you are good with each item.

3. Look at the task verbs. Familiarize yourself with them.

As a sidebar- the AP people consider a class period 45 minutes +/- 3 minutes. So we did spend 13 class periods
on this unit.
Vocabulary Words- I am sure quizlets already exist for AP Chemistry Unit 2 Vocab:

1. Electronegativity 10. Electron sea 19. Bond length

2. Ionic bond 11. Delocalized electrons 20. Bond Energy
3. Cation 12. Substitutional Alloy 21. Resonance Structure
4. Anion 13. Interstitial Alloy 22. Formal charge
5. Lattice 14. Polar Covalent Bond 23. Molecular Geometry
6. Lattice energy 15. Nonpolar Covalent Bond 24. Polar vs Nonpolar Molecule
7. Coulomb’s Law 16. Dipole 25. Bond hybridization
8. Metallic Bond 17. Lewis Dot Structure 26. Sigma bond
9. Alloy 18. Bond order 27. Pi bond

Some Additional Book Problems- It is common for odd #’ed book problems to have answers in the back of
textbooks- these I imagine are no exception.

Pg 404: #’s – 7, 19, 27, 29, 33, 35, 45, 55, 83, 87, 113, 115

Pg 444: #’s – 23, 39, 71

Here’s some extra practice as well.

1. Please draw particle diagrams for the following.

LiBr LiBr dissolved in water Ag (metal) Ag B alloy

2. Rank the following bonds from most polar to least polar with estimation.

F-F F-Cl F-Br

3. Rank the following bonds from most polar to least polar with estimation.

Cl-Na Cl-Si Cl-B

4. Label the compounds below as ionic, covalent, and metallic.

a. NaOH b. CO c. CoBr d. AuO e. CuBr f. CuAg

5. Circle the molecules below that have polar bonds but nonpolar molecules.

a. H2O b. F2 c. SF6 d. CO2 e. CF4 f. NF3

6. Complete the Lewis structure below. Then complete any resonance structures. Find the formal charge
on all of the C’s and O’s. Lastly, label the arrows and partial charges of each bond that requires it.

H O

C C H

a. What is the hybridization on each C in the original drawing?

b. Which structure is most likely the correct structure? Why?

c. What are the bond angles associated with the left-most carbon in the original drawing?

7. Rank the compounds based on highest lattice energy. NaCl NaF NaBr

8. Rank the compounds based on highest lattice energy. MgO MgF2 Mg3N2
9. In the image below.
a. What is the hybridization of the C in each structure?
b. How many sigma and pi bonds exist in each molecule?
c. Draw and label polarity arrows with +/- charges in the bonds that require it.
d. What is the molecular geometry of HCN?

10. Will an alloy between Cu and Fe be interstitial or substitutional? _________________-

11. Which molecular geometries are nonpolar when all atoms around the central atom are the same?

LEARNING OBJECTIVE ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE

SAP-4.C X AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE DERIVATION
AND DEPICTION OF HYBRID ORBITALS
WILL NOT BE ASSESSED ON THE AP EXAM.
Rationale: The course includes the distinction
between sigma and pi bonding, the use of VSEPR

sp2, and sp3 nomenclature. Additional aspects

related to hybridization are both controversial and
do not substantially enhance understanding of
molecular structure.

X HYBRIDIZATION INVOLVING D ORBITALS

WILL NOT BE ASSESSED ON THE AP EXAM.
WHEN AN ATOM HAS MORE THAN FOUR
PAIRS OF ELECTRONS SURROUNDING THE
CENTRAL ATOM, STUDENTS ARE ONLY
RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SHAPE OF THE
RESULTING MOLECULE.
Rationale: Current evidence suggests that
main-group hybridization involving d orbitals

need to teach any hybridization. Until agreement

is reached in the chemistry community, we
will continue to include only sp, sp2, and sp3

SAP-4.C.4

X MOLECULAR ORBITAL THEORY IS

RECOMMENDED AS A WAY TO PROVIDE
DEEPER INSIGHT INTO BONDING.
HOWEVER, THE AP EXAM WILL NEITHER
EXPLICITLY ASSESS MOLECULAR ORBITAL
DIAGRAMS, FILLING OF MOLECULAR
ORBITALS, NOR THE DISTINCTION
BETWEEN BONDING, NONBONDING, AND
ANTIBONDING ORBITALS.
Rationale: As currently covered in general

theory is limited to homonuclear molecules in the

second period.
