What is your favorite animal?
Once all student's responses are collected, ask students which animals they think are alike and different, and why.
Example Answer: "A mouse and a dog are alike because they both have fur." or "A cat and a fish are different because
one lives on land and the other lives in water."
Tell students that what they are doing when they look at the way these animals are alike or different is called classifying.
Define classifying for the class.
Explain that there is a way that scientists have learned to group all of the different animals in the world, and it is called
the animal classification system.
