Motivational Question: Discuss the different theory of urbanization.
 Modernization Theory is used to explain the process of modernization within
society. This theory is originated from the ideas of German Sociologist Max Weber
which provides the basis for modernization paradigm. This suggests that traditional
societies will adopt more modern practices. Proponents of this theory claim that
modern states are wealthier and more powerful and that their citizens are freer to
enjoy a higher standard of living.
 Dependency Theory is based on a Marxist view of the world, which sees
globalization in terms of the spread of market capitalism, and exploitation of cheap
labor and resources in return for the obsolete technologies of the developed world.
This theory embodies four main points: a. To develop an important internal effective
demand in terms of domestic markets; b. To recognize that the industrial sector, can
contribute more value-added to products; c. To increase worker’s income as a means
of generating more aggregate demand in national market conditions; d. To promote a
more effective government role in order to reinforce national development conditions
and to increase national standards of living. This theory is originated with
sociologist Immanuel Wallerstein, who suggests that the capitalists world system
determines how economic development takes place in the country. According to
Wallertein, the world economic system is divided into a hierarchy of three types of
countries: core, semi-peripheral and peripheral. Core countries are capital intensive,
have high wages and high technology production patterns and lower labor
exploitation and coercion. Peripheral countries are dependent on core countries for
capital and are less industrialized and urbanized. Semi-peripheral countries are less
developed than core nation but are more developed than peripheral nations. This
theory also suggest that wealthy countries benefit from other countries and exploit
those countries’ citizens.
 World-System Theory, developed by sociologist Immanuel Wallerstein. It is an
approach to world history and social change that suggests there is a world economic
system in which some countries benefited while others are exploited. This theory
emphasizes the social structure of global inequality. Attempt to elevate their
standards of living and improve social conditions.
