SAEINDIA Aerospace Activities

Background

SAE has had a long association with aerospace for over a hundred years. Back in 1916, the Society of Automobile Engineers, the
American Society of Aeronautic Engineers, the Society of Tractor Engineers and others interested in the growing mobility Industry
came together to form the “Society of Automotive Engineers”. The term “Automotive” was intended to represent any form of self-
propelled vehicle.

Today, SAE International has a thriving community of members from the Aerospace Industry, and a commanding position in the
area of Aerospace Standards with a high percentage of aerospace standards being maintained, managed and disseminated by
SAE International through various Aerospace Standards Technical Committees. SAE International also organizes various
aerospace specific activities for its members.

SAEINDIA, the largest strategic alliance partner of SAE International, SAEINDIA expanded into Aerospace in 2009 by
establishing the Aerospace Board on 17 December 2009. The timing of this expansion was driven by the emerging
unprecedented growth in the Aerospace Industry in India.

Aerospace in India

India has had an Aerospace Industry since 1940 when Hindustan Aircraft was created as a private company. Independent India
expanded aerospace activities by taking over the management of this company and creating Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, and
also establishing several key agencies such as the Defence Research and Development Organization, National Aerospace
Laboratories and Indian Space Research Organization. These agencies formed the core of Indian aerospace and were involved in
the development and manufacture of aerospace products during the 20th century.

With the advent of the 21st century, and the liberalization of the Indian economy, many private companies are able to operate in
the Indian Aerospace Industry and contribute to the global aerospace marketplace. Recent additions include multinational
companies (such as Airbus, BAE Systems, Boeing, Dassault, General Electric, Lockheed Martin, SAFRAN and United
Technologies Aerospace Systems), private Indian manufacturers (such as Godrej, Larsen & Toubro, Mahindra Aerospace, Tata
Advanced Systems Limited, and Tata Automation Limited), as well as engineering service providers (such as Cyient, HCL
Technologies, Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services, and Tech Mahindra). The prospect of emerging opportunities in the aerospace
sector has also spawned new educational programs at many colleges and universities.

The dramatic growth of the aerospace sector in India is driven by increasing demand on the civil aviation sector, the urgent need
for modernization on the defence sector, and policy changes introduced by the Government of India. At the present time, the sun
is shining brightly on the civil aviation sector in India. The advent of increasing economic prosperity (indicated by growth in the
GDP), and the increasing need for mobility of business personnel has led to a boom in India's civil aviation. Since 2007, many of
the airports have been modernized and today India has some of the most modern and efficient world-class airports. The number
of airlines and aircraft operating in the Indian skies has also increased significantly, and projections are that this will continue to
grow to meet the increasing demand. This, in turn, leads to a greater need for airport services as well as aircraft maintenance,
repair and overhaul facilities.

The Defence side of aerospace has also been growing dramatically in India. The Government of India has been pursuing a dual
approach to meeting the country's defence equipment needs. While many people talk about the need to develop indigenous
products (for India, by India), a more objective analysis shows that producing the variety of complex equipment needed will
require substantial upgrades to a broad spectrum of skills and capabilities in different areas such as R&D, engineering,
manufacturing, materials, infrastructure, etc.

The Government of India (through the Ministry of Defence) has defined the Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP) 2020 to simplify
the defence procurement procedure and to achieve the objective of self-reliance. There will be no offset clause in government-to-
government, single vendor and IGAs. Under the offset clause, foreign companies are required to invest part of their deal value in
the country and meant to improve domestic defence manufacturing. Indigenous Content of various categories has been increased
by 10%. This has been done to support the Make in India initiative. The recent changes to the Civil Aviation Policy and rules on
Foreign Direct Investment also are expected to influence the growth of the aerospace sector significantly.

Each of these avenues (civil aviation, indigenous products, products from MNCs, and policy changes) has led to new set of
opportunities for aerospace enthusiasts in India. These opportunities cut across the industry and will have a positive impact on
various elements of the Aerospace Industry.

SAEINDIA Aerospace Forum

The Aerospace Forum (previously known as Aerospace Board) of SAEINDIA was created to engage and support this increasing
aerospace footprint in India. The Aerospace Forum was officially inaugurated on 17 December 2009, at a simple function in
Bangalore, with Dr. Bala Bharadvaj of Boeing as the chairman.

In subsequent months, the Aerospace Forum set about creating a team of dedicated individuals to represent a broad spectrum
of the industry, and defining the strategy and direction of this Board. This team defined the overall objective for the Aerospace
Board to “Develop a strong community of interest, leading to a healthy aerospace ecosystem in India.” This objective was
deliberately chosen to be broad since it was felt that the aerospace story was still unfolding and SAEINDIA should have the
flexibility to engage in a wide range of activities. These activities were grouped into the following areas:
— Assist with Education
— Provide opportunities for increasing Knowhow
— Increase access to Standards
— Increase awareness and influence of Policy
— Enable Networking.

These Objectives remain relevant even today, and continue to guide the activities of the Aerospace Forum.
The first event of the Aerospace Forum was held on 26 March 2010 at the National Aerospace Laboratories in Bangalore. It was
a highly successful event on multiple counts:
— Brought leaders from DPSUs, Government Labs, Indian industry, and MNCs together on the same platform
— Enabled active exchange of ideas
— Demonstrated the enthusiasm and willingness of the different groups to work together

Over the past decade, many events and activities have been organized by the Aerospace Forum – some independently, but
quite a few in collaboration with other like-minded groups. A selected list of these events is listed below:
— “Intelligent Asset Management” by Dr. Richard Greaves, at Bangalore (May 2011)
— “Value Management” by Dr. Edward J Hoffman from NASA, jointly with PMI (2011)
— “National Aerospace Conference & Exposition 2012” at Chennai, with Anna University (Aug 2012)
— New Vistas of Indian Aerospace & Defense” with Indo-French Chamber of Commerce (Feb 2013)
— “Standards workshop” conducted by SAE International in Bangalore and Hyderabad (June 2012)
— “Propel High with Project Management” conference, jointly with PMI India (July 2014)

Committee meetings for HM-1& E-32 at Bangalore (Oct 2014)
— “Make In India - Transformational Driver for Aerospace & Defense” (July 2015)
— Blue Ribbon CXO Conclave in Bangalore (Sep 2015)
— Celebrating 5th Anniversary of formation of Aerospace Forum (Dec 2015)
— Various events in conjunction with the visit of Board of Directors of SAE International (Jan 2016)
— Contributing to “Skill India” initiative, working with KPMG (May-June 2016)
— Aerospace Then, Now and Future in Feb 2017.
— Systems Engineering for Prognostics and Health Management Systems on 30th May 2018.
— Digital Revolution In Aerospace & Defense Industry on 19th February 2019

As we look ahead, the Aerospace Forum has the potential to contribute to the aerospace ecosystem of India in several different
ways. Keeping this in mind, the Aerospace Forum is currently organized into the following focused teams:
— Membership & Recognition
— Academia & Faculty Development
— Professional Development Programs for Industry Members
— Events and Expositions
— Policy Development and External Collaboration

Summary
In summary, the Indian aerospace industry is poised to grow significantly in the years ahead. At the same time, there is need for
significant advances in skills and capability at various levels. With many Indian and multi-national organizations located in India,
there is a great opportunity for SAEINDIA to engage the aerospace professionals directly and in collaboration with other
organizations with similar objectives.

We look forward to greater participation from members, and expand our footprint in aerospace by welcoming new members

Message from President SAE International

Mr. Todd Zarfos

President, SAE International

I'm honoured to serve as your 2020 President of the SAE International. I would like to start off
by offering my thanks to some of the leaders who made this AeroCON 2020 possible. They
include Dr. Bala Bharadvaj President SAEINDIA, Mr. Damodaran Subramanian, Chair of the
AeroCON 2020 Steering Committee, Mr. J. Munirathnam, Chair of the AeroCON 2020
Organizing Committee and also the members of the Steering & Organizing Committees,
distinguished guest’s ladies and gentlemen.

As the president of SAE International I am seeing first-hand how the entire mobility Industry is
being impacted by the myriad of the destructive forces and how each is responding to every
imagined future. For example, the automotive industry sales forecasts for 2020 were
impacted significantly but we are already seen rebounds for strong forecast in nearly all
countries for 2021 and 2022.

What we are experiencing in the aerospace industry is not a singular or isolated event. In
fact, we are an eco-system and we can and are learning from one another. So how is
aerospace industry sector reimagining itself in a post-COVID era as the theme of AeroCON
so aptly states. One of the primary areas of focus has been on restoring confidence in the
flying public in commercial airplanes as being safe for travel.

Every year SAE International holds an AEROTECH America's Conference. SAE Aerotech is
the comprehensive global aviation event focussed on every facet of modern aircraft
development. We are happy to note that a similar conference series is getting started here in
India which is now a booming space sector in its own right.

There is a critical need for aerospace companies in this region to interact, exchange ideas
and collaborate in overcoming this challenging period. Also this sets the stage for a wider
participation in AeroCON and embarking on an active engagement of aerospace community
in the region. The aerospace industry is not alone all forms of mobility have been impacted
and looking to adapt and navigating towards each other.

This has been a very difficult year for all segments of mobility. But we're showing our
resilience in using the challenges to create solutions that will lead to a brighter future. To all
the AeroCON Organisers, participants and distinguished guests please accept my best
wishes for a successful virtual conference.

Message from Steering Committee, Chair

Mr. Damodaran Subramanian

Managing Director, SAFRAN Engineering Services, India

I have a great pleasure to write this note to introduce AeroCON 2020, a two-day technology exposition will be
followed by a sequel of events in the coming months.

AeroCON 2020 – conceptualized during the third quarter of 2019, SAEINDIA Aero forum members swung in
action since then to develop an event at par with any international Aeronautical conference. In our minds, the
synonymic model apparent was a flagship event AeroTECH conducted by SAE INTERNATIONAL.

We have decided to host this event in Bangalore, with the support and involvement from the Aero Industry
experts from other prominent cities like Hyderabad, Pune and Chennai. Unfortunately, due to the continued
COVID-19 pandemic we have decided and are adapting to new norms, to conduct this event completely
virtual. A event of this scale was a long term desire for the Aero-forum members with specific 3 main
objectives as outlined below:-

1. Creating awareness about the SAE organization to the Aeronautical community and increase the
memberships SAEINDIA with an affiliation from SAE INTERNATIONAL, has its heritage and core strength as
a technology consortium and standards organization for more than a century.

India is an emerging market as well a great place to accelerate the engineering process through its capacity.
To seize the above opportunities and challenges and convert this scenario to increase our footprint in India to
increase the aeronautical expertise

2.Increase the aerospace domain knowledge and skill quotient

● In India many aerospace, defense and space organizations exist, but it needed a forum for country’s Top
executives from the engineering organizations, Technical experts, Academicians, Students and researchers.
SAEINDIA with its wing of Aero Forum will bridge this gap, with its local and international members to nurture
the aerospace technical and domain skills.

● SAEINDIA Aero Forum is committed to creating a self-sustainable ecosystem in the country and AeroCON
2020 will be another contribution in this direction.

3.Help the community of practicing engineers, Academia and Students

AeroCON 2020 will also address how the organization who are affected by the current pandemic sustain, re-
imagine and rise. The Aerospace sector along with the Aviation Industry witnessed several challenges since
inception, Oil price hike, Geo-political disturbances, terror strikes and we strongly believe this will also pass
over.

To summarize this note, we strongly believe that AeroCON 2020, will be a successful event to pave a
stepping stone for developing strong aeronautical practices to the local and global needs. I take this
opportunity to thank my fellow members in different committees, SAEINDIA office, SAE INTERNATIONAL,
Volunteers and various teams in supporting me to steer this program chairmanship.

Message from Technical Chair & Co-Chair

Dr. G V V Ravikumar Dr. Ramakrishnan Raman

Chair, Technical Committee & Associate Co-Chair, Technical Committee & Principal
Vice President & Head Advanced Systems Engineer, Honeywell
Engineering Group, Infosys

The Aerospace Industry is a harbinger of technology. It has incubated, nurtured and matured many
advanced technologies for many decades, from composites to drones. Currently, this Industry is flying
through turbulence due to the COVID-19 pandemic but is preparing to bounce back. COVID-19 resulted in
reduced travel demand due to concerns related to the health and safety of passengers. The reduced
demand for flight hours is leading to reduced demand for spare parts and reduced demand for new
aircraft, in addition to impacts on various other sectors including travel and hospitality. The aerospace
ecosystem, from OEM to Supplier to Operator to MRO to regulator, is resilient enough to meet this
challenge. The Aerospace Industry has faced many challenges in the past and emerged stronger from each
of these challenges. The pandemic has taught us many lessons. Passenger health, safety and security are
paramount. Aircraft operations need to be sustainable and eco-friendly. The ecosystem should create
space for everyone and should be a win-win for everyone.

Passenger demand can pick up only when air travel guarantees health and safety. New standard operating
procedures (SOPs) need to be put in place to ensure passenger and employee safety. Transparency and
traceability of these SOPs need to be established. This will add to the additional cost of operations. Thus,
aerospace eco-system must focus more on enhanced efficiency with a reduced cost of operations than
ever before. Frugal innovations must take place at all levels from organizations to ecosystem level. The
Aerospace ecosystem is resilient and innovative. It will continuously imbibe, nurture and orchestrate
advanced technologies to navigate the business challenges of COVID era. It will learn from these
experiences and will create new opportunities.

AeroCON 2020 is a premier International Conference bringing together the entire Aerospace Ecosystem,
from OEM, Suppliers, Operators, Regulators, MROs etc., to discuss on the current challenges and
opportunities in this current and post COVID Era. The theme of this conference is Flying Through
Turbulence…Reimagining Aerospace. In line with the theme, we have structured the entire program into 4
broad themes focusing on both business and technology dimensions. Each of the themes will have one
keynote presentation and one panel discussion.

We are very thankful to all the distinguished speakers and panelist from across the globe who are
participating in this event. We are extremely grateful to AeroCON 2020 sponsors, who have provided us the
required support in these turbulent times. We also welcome all the delegates from Industry, both public
and private sector, delegates from universities, and research laboratories who are actively participating in
this conference. We look forward to all the delegates leveraging this conference as a platform to promote
working together to advance their knowledge, exchange ideas with colleagues, and collaborate to help the
Aerospace Industry to overcome the prevailing challenges.

Technology Theme 1
“Technology Landscape in Post Covid Era”

Keynote Speech
Objectives:
COVID-19 has amplified the need towards technological innovations for safe, healthy and efficient
travel experience. This keynote address will provide a brief introduction on technology landscape
in post Covid Era.

The COVID19 pandemic has influenced every perspective of life globally and the aviation industry
is no exception. Even as the industry has shown great resilience in the past during such down
trends, the jury is still out about how traffic will recover following the current crisis and what this will
mean for the airlines, aircraft manufacturers, OEMs, the supply chain and aftermarket support
businesses.

The magnitude of this crisis can be gauged by factors like extent of air travel restrictions, time to
recovery, new normal and future growth path. The longer the restrictions last, the more airlines will
run out of liquidity, leading to bankruptcies, nationalizations or consolidation, hence causing
significant changes in the industry landscape and customer structure for aircraft manufacturers.

I firmly believe in what Albert Einstein said, “in the middle of every crisis, lies a great opportunity”.
Even as the pandemic has rendered air travel & transit through airports risky due to the fear of
spread of infection, there are opportunities for innovation towards making air travel safe again
thereby restoring passenger confidence.

I see disruptive technologies like Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Sciences &
Autonomy being at the forefront of this opportunity. The post-covid times are likely to see
transformations in the following areas:

• Touchless airport transits and flight to reinstate the faith in safety

• Use of machine-learning & artificial intelligence to automate scanning & isolation.
• Increased use of data & predictive models in supply chain
• Cabin Configuration changes to enable social distancing norms

According to aviation experts, more than 70 areas of passenger journey are set to change in the
coming days. As we deal with the current crisis, I foresee increased use of new technologies to
provide long term sustainable solutions rather than just a quick fix for the current situation.

Business Theme 2
“Challenges and Opportunities for Safe and Sustainable Operations”

Keynote Speech
Objectives:
The Covid-19 pandemic is the gravest crisis our industry has faced. There is not one single player in
the aerospace market that is immune to the crisis, be it an airline, a lessor, an MRO, an equipment
OEM, an aircraft OEM, a training center or an airport. Everyone, everywhere around the world is
strongly hit and impacted by the crisis without exception, which makes this crisis unprecedented by its
breadth and its depth. It is also a long-term crisis. The recovery of air traffic will be very slow. We
anticipate recovering 2019 traffic levels between 2023 for domestic flights and 2025 for international
flights. The world in itself is a different one from what it used to be some nine months ago. Covid-19
has aggravated tensions between countries. The pandemic has long-term repercussions on people
that have lost their appetite to travel, on governments and on the complete supply chain. The
challenge for our industry is to adapt to the new situation.

But despite Covid-19, I remain confident in the future of civil aviation. I am strongly convinced that our
world needs civil aviation and that people will be willing to fly again because flying means freedom,
flying means connecting people and cultures and countries, flying is also an enabler for economic
growth and flying contributes to peace and democracy.

However, we will have obviously less means than before to go after our aviation ambition, so we will
need to be smarter all together, we need to work together among all players. More than ever, the first
priority of our industry remains safety. Our industry is more vulnerable than it was before and we need
to stay focused on safety. Keeping safety in mind at all times, the immediate priority is to recover from
the Covid-19 crisis. This means removing all restrictions on domestic and international flight
operations. We also need to act together to restore trust in air travel and to demonstrate to the public
that the overall end-to-end air travel journey is safe and compliant with the most stringent health
standards at each and every step of the journey: before arriving at the airport, at the airport and inside
the plane. This is why we at Airbus together with our partners have launched the Keep Trust in Air
Travel Initiative.

In parallel to the catalyzing of a safe and quick return to operations, we need to continue building the
foundations for India to become a world leader in the civil aviation industry. This includes further
developing the domestic market, capturing the international traffic from India, growing the MRO and
training eco-systems, stimulating the helicopter business as well as developing a sustainable aviation
industry. I strongly feel that the coming years will bring in innovation to match anything in the history of
aviation with the development of zero-emission aircraft and the decarbonisation of the entire aviation
sector.

Let us keep faith. It will take time, but the industry will recover while contributing to building a better
future.
