Importance of Philosophy
1. Philosophical _________________
Philosophical reflection is one of the important __________________ that one needs in doing philosophy.
According to Marcel, a French existentialist philosopher, reflection is simply giving time to think, a
momentary ceasing of work, and giving attention to something (as cited in Santiago-Espartinez, 2010, p.
36).
Thus, philosophical reflection is deeply _______________ and is intimately anchored on our day-to-day
existence.
Thus, it is through philosophical reflection that we are able to deepen our ___________________ (as a
human person).
There are two types of reflection according to Marcel:
a. primary reflection is characterized by the breaking of the unity of experience through the following
mental acts: (1)______________, (2)_____________, and (3)_____________ the experience into
smaller details.
b. secondary reflection- is characterized by the act of recapturing the unity of the original experience
by gathering back together what has been separated by the primary reflection, and then (1)
______________, (2)______________ and (3)___________ these previously isolated experiences.
2. Constructing and Evaluating ___________________
Doing philosophy means to be able to express and support one’s claims ___________.
Thus, to express our views or beliefs without justifying them and without providing good reasons for a
rational person to adhere to is not in itself an act of doing philosophy.
In this way, we do not only promote agreement and harmony, but also ______________ thinking. For this
reason, we must learn how to construct and evaluate arguments properly for it is with the use of arguments
that we are able to express our reasoning skills in a clear and logical manner.
_______________ asserts or claims that something is true or not. It can be either true or false—that is, it
must have a truth value.
______________ that is being made and the reasons that support the claim are the two essential parts of an
argument, namely, the premises and the conclusion.
______________ are the statements that serve as evidence or support for the conclusion.
