Department of Mathematics & Computer Application

The department of Mathematics was established in 1979 while Computer Application was
started in 1996. The Dept. has a traditional undergraduate course in Mathematics which leads to a
B.Sc. degree. So far Computer Application is concerned it started as a vocational programme at
under graduate level and initially it had a liberal financial assistance of the UGC. The department
has come a long way during last three years and we can make a claim that we did not miss the bus
and we could successfully join that journey towards a new world of computers which was soon to
be the new identity of our nation as a new technological power on the world map. Today we are
proud to put it on record that all the students of this college pass out with some sort of practical
skill in the field of computers.
Curricular Aspects
The department of Computer Application offers various programmes for the benefit of our
students. However our basic programme at first degree level deserves first priority while one
makes a reference to the curricular activities of this department. This course is the most sought
after study programme in the college. Students from every stream (arts, science, commerce) can
opt for it however they are admitted strictly in accordance with a merit order. As a result there is a
waiting list every year and it substantiates our claim about the popularity of the course. The
students are taught 10 papers during three years of their under graduate studies. These papers
exhaustively cover the subject as one can verify it from the details for every paper given ahead :

Besides the study of these papers the students are also required to work on a project in
their final semester. The project work provides them with an opportunity to test their theoretical
knowledge of the subject on a practical platform.
Apart from this course the department has also started a BCA programme from this year. This is
an under graduate degree programme exclusively in the field of computers and it has been started with a
view to provide a base to those of our students who wish to join MCA and higher academic programmes in
the field of Computer Application.

The depart also assists a career oriented course in web designing that is available to the students as
an ‘add on’ course at first degree level. The course is run at certificate/diploma as well as advanced
diploma level.

Practices
There are many healthy practices that have been initiated by this department. Some of
them are as follow :
1. The department has computerized the entire admission process.
2. This institution is an autonomous body therefore we have a big responsibility of processing the
results of our students. We are happy to note that every work related to result – preparation, its
declaration and still further the printing of mark sheets is performed by this department since the
beginning of autonomy in 2003.
3. The department also shares the responsibility of maintaining and updating the website of the
institute.
4. The department provides a free access of internet to the students. We have broadband connection
for the purpose.
5. The department invites scholars from the neighboring institutions for the benefit of the students.
6. The department also has to its credit a successful organization of a workshop in the year 2002.
7. Besides the above healthy practices which have students and their studies at focus, this department
also assists the office of the principal in various administrative duties round the year.
a. When the report of the fifth Pay Commission was implemented in the state, the
department got the opportunity to prepare the revised scales and arrears of all the
employees belonging to the institute.
b. Since there is a rapid increase in digital correspondence with the higher authorities, the
department shares this responsibility too. A phenomenal growth in electronical mail in
terms of its volume has also enhanced the responsibility of this department. The
department is responsible for checking the mail and sending the required replies as per
instruction from the principal.
c. The department has also shared the responsibility of making the entire college staff
computer literate.

Teaching Learning and Evaluation

The department is bountiful in terms of teaching aids, equipments etc. We have LCD projectors,
photocopier, printers, scanners, camera and latest licensed softwares. The computers are upgraded and
they are connected with servers. The students make a liberal use of these facilities so as to enhance their
skills. We have a system of continuous evaluation therefore the performance of the students is assessed
round the year. There are internal assessment tests, seminars, quiz and other activities like project work
that help us to evaluate our students in a very broad way.

Research Consultancy and Extension

Since the teaching of computer application is limited to graduate level we are yet to begin the
research work in the area. However we are sure that the gradual and steady growth which this department
has secured by now, will not let that point of time lost somewhere in distant and remote future when our
students will excel in the area of research and consultancy. Consequently we shall also be in a position to
provide extension services.

Infrastructure & learning Resources

We are happy to note that the department of computer application is one of the richest departments
is terms of infrastructure and learning resources in the college. We have a well-equipped laboratory with
48 Computers and another laboratory which will be even bigger than the existing one, will be available
from the following academic session. We are also going to have a facility of virtual classes for our
students where they will be able to join a virtual lecture being telecast with the help of ‘Edusat’ by ISRO.

We have already provided objective information on the available equipments gadgets etc. Besides
that we are pleased to submit that this departments is the major source of fee- generation and it is being run
on a self financing pattern. The present situation of our funds ensures that the department has a promising
future ahead so far as its infrastructure and resources are concerned.

Student Support and Progression

The department continues with the tradition of this college so far as support to the students is
concerned. All of our students being girls we do our best to encourage them for higher studies in the area
of computer application. We put maximum efforts to provide them a conducive atmosphere because this
being a govt. institution most of our students belong to economically poor sections. We work with a sense
of responsibility towards the hard earned money of their guardians.

Our efforts in this direction have borne fruits as the number of students opting for PG programmes in the
subject in gradually on the rise.

Organization and Management

The Department is managed with the help of well-qualified teaching faculty. The details of every
faculty member are given ahead.
Details of Income & Expenditure of the Department

After the completion of the UGC assistance the department runs under self-financing scheme.
Now the source of income is annual fee paid by the students. Following is the income and expenditure of
last five years –
