1 Scope
This specification sets the minimum acceptable requirements for supply of a covers for the
surface entry chambers which shall be installed along all duct routes.
In case of difference between this specification and the specified international standards then
the most stringent requirements shall prevail.

2 Applicable Standards and Codes

BS EN124 : 1994 Gully tops and manhole tops for vehicular and
pedestrian areas. Design requirements, type testing,
marking, quality control
BS 7903:1997: Selection and use of gully tops and manhole covers for
installation within the highway
ISO 1083 Spheroidal graphite cast irons - Classification.

3 Climatic Data
For this document, the climatic conditions of the Sultanate of Oman shall be taken into account.
The following data provided is for guidance only.

 Maximum ambient temperature: 55 ᴼC,

 Maximum humidity: can reach 100%
 Maximum metal temperature in sun: 80 ᴼC,
 Rainfall: 100mm per year approx.

4 Material characterisation
Chamber covers shall be manufactured comply with requirements of EN 124.
The metal used for the manufacture of castings the manhole top shall be Spheroidal graphite
iron (Ductile Iron) 400/15 according to ISO 1083.
All casts units shall be cleanly cast and shall be free from air holes, sand holes, cold shuts and
chill. They shall be neatly dressed and carefully cleaned of any rough edges

5 Classification
Group 4 – minimum Class D400
Access covers and gratings capable of withstanding a 40 tonnes test load. For use in areas
where cars and trucks have access, including carriageways, hard shoulders and pedestrian
areas.

6 Chamber Covers Technical Features

All Chambers shall be fitted with covers which can be opened by one person using the appropriate
tools. Covers shall have a clear unobstructed opening to provide as much access as possible to
the Chamber to which the cover is fitted (i.e. when cover/s removed full extent of the chamber is
visible/accessible).

 Frame height: 100mm minimum
 Clear opening: As per chamber type. Refer to chamber drawing
 Hinged cover with opening at 130 degs and blocking at 90 degs to avoid any accidental
self-closure on the workers.
 The cover shall have lifting eyes.
 A reliable locking system.
 A sound proofing gasket for stability and silence.
 The cover shall be equipped with anti-theft system to avoid the removal of the cover out
of the frame.

6.1 Marking
All covers in the OBC network will be Black in colour and annotated in English and Arabic –
 Oman Broadband
 Manufacturer name or Logo
 Class of loading

7 Inspection and Testing

The material shall meet the above mentioned criteria.
The MANUFACTURER shall produce the following certificates:
 ISO 9001 mentioning the name of the manufacturer and the name and address of the
foundry.
 ISO 14001 mentioning the name of the manufacturer and the name and address of the
foundry.
 EN 124 certificate approved by an authorised independent third party. The certificate shall
mention the name of the product certified.

Material shall be inspected randomly during installation for non-compliance to specification and
any bad installation practices.

OBC may reject any item that does not totally comply with requirements of this specification.

8 Criteria of acceptance/rejection of material

Contractor shall supply full MDS for the selected product. This will be checked against the relevant
specification and the material will only be sourced once OBC have accepted the product.

9 Quality assurance/control
A copy of manufacturer`s Quality Assurance and Quality Control shall be submitted for review
and approval.

10 Packing and Delivery:

The manufacturer shall provide packing and shipping procedures for OBC’s approval.

11 Documentation:
The manufacturer shall provide the following vendor data as a minimum.

 Catalogues of the proposed manufacturers.

 Dimensional details.
 Local agent name and address.
 Detailed material specification.
 Manufacturer’s drawings showing dimensions.

12 Guarantee
The manufacturer will provide guarantees and warranties and OBC will review prior to
acceptance of the product.

13 Miscellaneous requirements
Preference will be given to a cover system which incorporates a hinged arrangement. This
arrangement should allow single person opening and be able to separate completely the cover
from the frame.
