Miss Moyer's Third Grade Unit on Representing

Data
Dear Families,
In the upcoming math unit, we will be learning about different ways to represent data
and doing hands-on activities. We will be covering how to represent various graphs and
charts as well as how to interpret the information that is included on the particular
graph or chart. We will start by learning about tally charts through flipping coins and
keeping track of their classmates’ favorite movie genres! We will then learn about tables
through surveying and keeping track of their classmates’ favorite fruits. Then, we will
discuss pictographs by keeping track of each others’ favorite animals. In order to learn
about line plots, the students will ask each other about their favorite subject in school
and keep track of this information. Finally, we will go over bar graphs and represent
each others’ favorite stores based on the data we collect. In order to end the unit, the
students will come up with a question and survey students in the school in order to
represent the data that they collect in a graph or chart of their choice.
Below, I have included the literature we will be reading, resources that may be helpful,
and other information that will be useful throughout this unit. Thank you for your
support as your child continues to learn! If you have any questions, please feel free to
reach out to me!
