Discourse analysis
1. Read the following extract.

2. Analyze:

a) Genre

b) Topic of the extract

c) Purpose of the text

d) Field (How is it realized in the text?)

e) Tenor (+/- dialogic? Is the writer in equal terms

with the reader?

f) Mode (channel + find a good example of theme/rheme

sequence)

g) Appraisal (find examples in which the author evaluates

the issue under discussion)

h) Can you find any instance of intertextuality?

i) Cohesive devices:
1. Look for the referents of the phrases and the pronoun
highlighted in green.
2. Focus on the conjunctions highlighted in pink. What logical
relation do they establish?
Can you find an example in which the logical relation
between two sentences is not linguistically signalled
(without the use of a linking word)?
3. What is the word "do" (highlighted in orange) an instance of?
4. Look for an instance of ellipsis.
5. Find examples of repetition (others than the same word).
