"My Left Foot", directed by Jim Sheridan and released in 1989, is the true
story of Christy Brown life, based on his autobiography. He was born into a
large, poor, loving family in Dublin, Ireland in 1932 and considered for the first
10 years of his life to be hopelessly retarded. He was born with cerebral palsy,
unable to speak, and close to quadriplegic, able to control only his left foot.

The movie shows most of Christy’s life with his father, who wasn’t very kind and
his mother, who faithfully cares for him and believes that her son is intelligent.
She continually tries to find solutions for her son; her first step is to place a
board on the ground, with a piece of chalk, near Christy’s foot.

In one main scene, Christy is watching his father interact with his other sons.
When his father implies that Christy does not know what is happening,
frustration boils over him, and is able, for the first time, to pick up the chalk
with his toes, and wrote the word mother. This provides all of the proof the
family needs to know that Christy is able to interact with them.

2. Dr. Eileen Cole recognizes Christy's artistic talent and offers to train him. She
brings him Shakespeare's "To be or not to be" soliloquy, gives him training in
speech and movement control.

Using his left foot, he learns to write and grows up to become a well-known
author and painter, becoming one of the most important voices in Irish
literature.

In the film we all can see how the kids play together in the neighborhood and
socialize with each other, we can see that in all our neighborhoods where all the
kids go out to play and don’t have to worry about anything else than being
happy and enjoy their childhood

Also, Brown family was very religious and devoted, something very common in
Colombian traditional families that most of them are very devoted to
Catholicism.

3. The story of Christy Brown is one of the greatest stories of human courage
and determination. He was not an easy man to forget. Tiny and weirdly, bearded
and messily, he managed to grow into a poet, novelist, painter and a lyrical
chronicler of his own life.
