Exam Reflection for Biol.

118
Autumn 2020

Please answer the following questions to earn 4 points that will be restored to your exam grade.
This is a meta-cognition exercise, asking you to reflect on what you have done, and how well it
worked. The goal is to approach this with a growth mindset. What can you change to do better?

1. (1 pt.) Types of Exam Errors

How many questions (total) did you miss on this exam? 4; questions 3, 6, 10,
12
How many of those questions did you miss because you didn’t none
understand a key concept, or didn’t know how to apply that concept?
How many questions did you miss because you didn’t know some none
important details (facts). (You missed out on some depth.)
How many questions did you miss because you didn’t trust yourself? 2; questions 6 & 10
(You changed your answer from a correct to incorrect choice.)
How many questions did you miss because you weren’t careful or were 2; questions 3 & 12
nervous? (You mis-read question, or a figure &/or answer choices?)

2. (1 pt.) Preparation Strategy

Total hours of study time (include watching lectures, or attending “office 32 hours
hours”, as well as exam review, group study….)
Estimate the % of that total time that you spent passively (reading, 34.4 %; 11 hours
listening, watching)
Estimate the % of that total time that you spent actively (working with 65.6%; 21 hours
study group, creating summaries, practicing recall, drawing pathways...)
If you were confused about a topic, did you seek help via Piazza, asking Yes, I asked peers
peers, or going to “office hours” with questions? (yes/no) in a groupchat
Explain how your responses to questions 1 & 2 will change your approach to the next exam.

In this unit, compared to the last, my total number of hours studying was 6 hoursless, and my
exam score was lower. I need to work on increasing the amount of time I spend actively
studying, and attend office hours more.

3. (1 pt.) Making a Connection

Pick a concept or key issue from this exam unit & discuss it relevance to your own life. Explain why
it is useful to you & how it applies to you personally.

I work as a nursing assistant at a memory care facility, and many of the patients have Alzheimer’s
or some type of dementia, which we covered in Lecture 7. It’s helpful to know that protein mis-
folding and protein complexity loss is shared in many brain degenerative diseases. Memory loss is
caused by the shrinking of the memory region of the brain and the disappearance of cortical
neurons.

4. (1 pt.) Correct Answer

Explain the correct answer; what is the logic behind the question, for example what is the key
concept that applies? In addition, show where the correct answer can be found by sharing a
screenshot of a lecture note page, or a text book page, for full credit. For partial credit give a link
to a web page where you found it plus a screen shot of the web’s information. We prefer that you
use the lectures/text as your source, because previous analysis of student reflections showed that
students who found information in the class resources tended to have higher grades.

This question dealt with graph-reading more so instead of being knowledge-based. Damage to the
liver in NAFLD affects other organ systems, such as the musculoskeletal systems. NAFLD is more
prevalent in men than in women
An action potential traveling down to a synaptic terminal triggers neurotransmitter release.
Excitatory postsynaptic potentials are induced by neurotransmitters that open calcium (Ca2+)
channels.
Oxygen debt is paid after the exercise is over, during the recovery period.
Lines Y & Z more accurately match the graphs depicted of the rate of energy expenditure vs time
(minutes) for both strenuous and endurance exercise.
This question dealt with graph reading. I wasn’t able to find a class resource specifically about
genotypes, since we didn’t discuss them at all or their relevance to Alzheimer’s in lecture 7. Only
tau, amyloid, CSF, ROS, and microglial inflammation was mentioned with regards to the incidence
of dementia. I wasn’t being careful enough, and I ended up choosing the right kind of dementia,
but the wrong APOE genotype. However, I did find an answer online substantiating the answer to
the question.
