● Jam Board
● Finding the area of rectangle with an
unknown measurement
● Build your own zoo
● Math journal entry
Jam Board!
Learning Goals
Today we will...
● Apply the area formula to calculate the area of a rectangle.
● Discover how multiplication and division can be used to solve
problems involving the area of a rectangle.
● Calculate the area of a rectangle that has unknown
measurements.
Social Objectives…
● Attentive listening, mutual respect, participation
Area Review

Area
● The size of a surface
● We can calculate the area of a rectangle by multiplying the
base by the height
● Area = base x height
5cm

10cm

Area
A = base x height
= 10cm x 5cm
= 50cm²
Finding the Area of Rectangle with
an Unknown Measurement

What do we know?
? Area = 48cm²

What do we need to find out?

6cm
Think-Pair-Share
How can we solve for height?
Finding Area of Rectangle with
Unknown Measurement

Area = base x height

48cm² = 6cm x height
? Area = 48cm²

8cm = height

6cm
Finding the Area of Rectangle with
Unknown Measurement
area = base x height

height = area ÷ base

base = area ÷ height
