1. Using the classification of EC (Lecture 1), how would you classify the Blue Nile’s
business?
A.1 According to the classification of EC, Blue Nile’s business is a traditional Business to
Consumer (B to C) online business.
A.2 As of 2015 Blue Nile had a revenue of $480 million and had become the eight largest
specialty jewelry company in the U.S. For a physical store to achieve a similar revenue around
300 stores and 3000 employees are required while Blue Nile has done it with a single 10000 ft.
warehouse and just 301 employees. Therefore, it is difficult to survive for physical stores as
some 465 jewelry stores were closed in 2003 alone, therefore large traditional companies are
now also movie towards a brick and mortar business model by offering online merchandise and
streamlining their customer service and supply chain.
A.3 The critical success factors of Blue Nile’s business are providing intense competition to
physical stores because it has a lower operating cost and is therefore able to give more discounts.
It is giving a larger variety of choices to buyers and more information than physical stores, it
provides educational guides and reliable ratings for each stone, while also providing other
facilities like online chat option, payment options and customization. Another major success
factor is the 100% money back guarantee it provides to customers for 30 days.
3. Competition between Blue Nile and Amazon.com will continue to increase. In your
opinion, which one will win? (Visit their websites and see how they sell jewelry.)
A.3 I think BLUE NILE would be more successful because it has an established customer base
and is offering more dedicated additional facilities to customers such as educational insights and
customization, insurance for purchased jewelry, free returns, free lifetime warranty and free
shipping. Blue Nile also offers the facility to sell your diamonds online in partnership with
CIRCA along with a dedicated Blue Nile credit card as a payment option.
4. Find the payment options at Blue Nile when you shop there.
A.4 Blue Nile offers payments via credit and debit cards and through PAYPAL and a dedicated
Blue Nile credit card subscription that offers credited or flexible payments made over time and
also exclusive discounts.
