How safe are we in our country?

Introduction?

Even though cases of petty thefts, robbery, and mugging are reported everywhere in Europe, the crime
rate of this country is one of the lowest in Europe, making Georgia a safe country to visit at any time of
the year. (Add more introduction)

1)The 1907 Tiflis bank robbery, also known as the Yerevan Square expropriation, was an armed
robbery on 26 June 1907. in the city of Tiflis in the Tiflis Governorate  in the Caucasus Viceroyalty of
the Russian Empire (now Georgia’s capital, Tbilisi). A bank cash shipment was stolen by Bolsheviks to
fund their revolutionary activities. The robbers attacked a bank stagecoach and surrounding police and
military using bombs and guns while the stagecoach was transporting money through Yerevan Square
(now Freedom Square) between the post office and the Tiflis branch of the State Bank of the Russian
Empire. The attack killed forty people and injured fifty others, according to official archive documents.
The robbers escaped with 341,000 rubles (equivalent to around US 3.86 million in 2017).

2) The Algeti Wolves  was a paramilitary organization in Georgia who claimed responsibility for a series
of small-scale terrorist attacks against Russian diplomats and military in Georgia in 1995. The name of
the group comes from the Algeti river gorge in south-central Georgia, a place of Georgian resistance
to Iranian invasion in the 17th century.

3)Although Armenia, Chechnya, Estonia, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Ukraine and Uzbekistan have
long had criminals and bandits, during the disorder of the Russian Revolution of 1917, armed gangs
proliferated until they became a very significant factor which controlled society. The criminal culture
with its own slang, culture and laws became known as Vorovskoy Mir (Russian: воровской мир) or
"Criminal/Thieves World".

4)Three suspected militants and a special forces soldier have been killed in a siege on an apartment
in the Georgian capital Tbilisi in 2017.

Explosions and gunfire rocked a block of flats in the Isani district during the 20-hour stand-off.
One of the alleged militants was arrested and four soldiers were wounded, officials said.

The suspects were not thought to be Georgian nationals.

Officials believed them to be members of a "terrorist group" and were working to identify.

The security service said they had refused to surrender and were firing and lobbing grenades from inside.

Statistics

Crimes against property are the most commonly reported crime in Georgia, followed by violent crimes and
drug-related offences, reveal statistics released today by official sources.

The National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat) published data from Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs
today, which shows that 37,944 crimes were recorded in 2017 in Georgia, of which 1,013 were committed
against a person’s life.

Statistics show that the number of crimes increased by 5.4 percent in comparison to 2016.

Last year 21 cases of human trafficking were registered in Georgia of which two cases were detected.

In 2017, the five most commonly reported crimes in Georgia were:

1. Crime against property (14,385 crimes)

2. Crime resulting in injury (5,349 crimes)

3. Drug-related offences (4,762 crimes)

4. Transport crime (2,626 crimes)

5. Crime against normal government functionality (2,421 crimes)

Last year 12,641 people were victims of crime – 11,993 were Georgian citizens, 561 were foreigners, 10
victims had dual citizenship, three were stateless and 74 victim’s details were not specified.

The statistics show that in most cases, the victims were male. Specifically in 2017 there were 6,705 male
victims and 5,886 female victims of crime.
The majority of victims of crime were aged between 25 and 44 – in this age category there were 5,394 victims
of crime in 2017. Similarly, about 5,015 victims were older than 44; 1,519 victims were between 17 and 24
years old; and 659 victims were less than 17 years old.

The total number of road traffic accidents reached 6,079 in Georgia in 2017, reported Geostat, of which 160
were caused by intoxication. As a result 8,461 people were injured and 517 were killed on Georgia’s roads.
