Diary of a Part Time Indian

Character Window

For this assignment you’re going to take a moment to look inside the characters of Part Time Indian and get to
know why they do the things they do. Look at the example below:

Step 1: Fold your paper in half. Steps 2-5 will be done

on the front of the page.

Step 2: Write “Junior” at the top of the page with the

phrase “When we take the time to study a character’s
actions, we can learn so much about the kind of
person our character is” underneath his name.

Step 3: For your character window, we

are all going to start with Junior. On the right
“sticky,” find at least four “actions” from the
text that tell us something about the kind of
person he is. This can be direct OR indirect
characterization, but either way, it must be
actions he takes. Jot down these actions
with the page number they appear on.

Step 4: Inside the two sticky notes, list the

things you know about Junior’s personality
based off of his actions on the outside of the
window. See the example below.
Step 5: Underneath the sticky notes, follow the example below and write “in character” and “out of character.”
Under these two headings you will list things Junior does that seem to “fit” his personality and things he does
that seem to be a sudden change from his “normal” behavior.

Step 6: On the inside of your paper you will repeat steps 2-5 but with any character from Part Time Indian that
you choose. Just make sure it is someone you have enough information about.

Step 7: When you have finished, please take a clear picture of both the outside and inside and submit it to
Google Classroom.
