CHAPTER 1

ACTIVITY 1.1
Have you ever tried to show your grandparents memes on Facebook? How did they react? Is their response similar to your response given the similar stimulus?
Explain why your responses to the meme vary using the context element of speech. In 3 paragraphs, not less than 200 words. (20 pts).

Yes, I tried to show to my grandparents some memes that is going around the internet. I showed them memes that I really find funny. Both my
grandparents look really confused and does not understand a thing.

I reacted differently than my grandparents do because of the evolution of culture. The internet can be a complex beast to keep up with, especially when
online culture is being driven in great part by teenagers. Certain slang terms and terms and modern humorous jokes are difficult to understand especially when you
are already at your 50’s and above. Technology has been ag big factor on todays generations because you will learn from people with different cultures and beliefs
just by surfing around the internet. In general, todays generation or what we called gen z are better educated and more complex than those in the previous
generations it is because of the advanced technology and hi-tech way of teaching where you can learn even by the use of your smart phone.

Over the past few years from the first generation to that of the millennials today the world has undergone large cultural and societal shifts. The teenagers
became versatile and evolved as the years passes by, but todays generation is just a fruit of the past generation.

ACTIVITY 1.2
Give a real-life example where you observed either the society’s standpoint or receiver’s standpoint function of communication and how the function proved
beneficial in the situation. Three paragraphs not less than 200 words. (30 pts).

Society’s standpoint is the modern approach on peoples perception. It states how the day to day experience alters or influences a person’s opinion.
Generally the standpoint of the society arises when people recognizes the value of power that creates a different groups within a society.

The days of edsa revolution or the people power revolution is one of the perfect example where you will see the importance of societys standpoint that has
been used by the media to persuade and encourage people to stand against the governance of the former dictator. The media had come to its success not by
accident. For Philippine media today is a product of context and history. The Philippines is a nation in perennial transition trapped in many contradictions. It is a
nation that made a world history when the people of Philippines ousted the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos from 1965-1986 , who had served long as president.
When martial law was proclaimed on September 21, 1972, all the papers including the so called “oligarchic press” and broadcast staions were closed it is because
the media alerted the listeners to safeguard the ballots.

Many local mass media had a great role during the edsa revolution by letting [people know the real happenings during that time. They have been
responsible in giving people knowledge and updates during the snap election and the fervary election.
