Self-Introductory Speech Assignment Sheet

Course: Communications 108 – Public Speaking

Instructor: Linda Quinones-Vaughan
Sessions: MWF and TTR Classes

Assignment:
This assignment is to give your audience an understanding of who you are. Please select one to three
aspects of your identity and concentrate on relaxation and the fundamental techniques of speech delivery.
The speech is to be 3 to 5 minutes in length, exceeding the time limit will result in a reduction of your
composition score by one full grade.

Guidelines:
1. Using the following information, prepare your self-introductory speech. The document, “Steps in
Preparation of a Self-Introductory Speech” provided from Osborn, Michael and Osborn, S. (2003)
Instructor’s Resource Manual to accompany Public Speaking 6th Edition. Boston: Houghton
Mifflin, can be found on the class instructor’s web-site at csub.edu.

2. Self-introductory topics are due three class dates before your assigned speech date.

3. Assigned speech dates are noted on the class syllabus. Special Note: The number you randomly
drew on the first day of class corresponds with your assigned speech date. If you did not draw a
number it is your responsibility to notify the instructor and obtain a number for your assigned
speech date.

4. Narrow your main points you want to deliver. Decide what you want the audience to know. Be
sure you are clear on what it is you want the audience to understand. Examples: Are you an
award winner? Has something occurred at the workplace that you want to share? Do you come
from a large or small family? What are your aspirations – what is it you want to accomplish in
life.

5. Do not read your speech.

Objectives of the Assignment:

To understand and apply the principles introduced in “Public Speaking as a Dynamic Process” from
Osborn, Michael and Osborn, S. (2003) Public Speaking 6th Edition. Boston.

To keep your audience engaged. Use eye contact with your audience and use an attention grabber in your
opening.

To effectively use breathing and visualization techniques to help control your public speaking
apprehension.

To deliver the speech extemporaneously and with confidence. Remember to practice again and again and
again.

Evaluation of Speech:
Following is a critique sheet, which will be used to help evaluate your speech.
