FAMILY CASE STUDY

OBJECTIVES

INTRODUCTION

I. FAMILY STRUCTURE, CHARACTERISTICS AND DYNAMICS


 Demographic data to include:
o Members of the household and relationship to the head of
the family
o Age
o Sex
o Civil status
o Place of residence of each member whether living with the
family or elsewhere
 Type of family structure (nuclear, extended, patriarchal,
matriarchal)
 Educational attainment of each member
 Ethnic background and religious affiliation
 Dominant family member/s in terms of decision-making
especially in matters of health care
 General family relationship/dynamics (presence of any readily
observable conflict between members, communication patterns
and characteristics among members
 Significant others and the roles they play in family’s life

II. SOCIO-ECONOMIC
 Occupation, place of work and income of each working
members
 Adequacy of income to meet basic necessities
 Who makes decisions about money and how it is spent

III. HOME AND ENVIRONMENT


 Housing
o Adequacy of living space
o Sleeping arrangement
o Presence of breeding sites of vectors of diseases
o Presence of accident hazards
o Food storage and cooking facilities
o Water supply (source, ownership, potability)
o Toilet facility (type, ownership, sanitary condition)
o Drainage system (type, sanitary condition)
 Kind of neighborhood (congested, slum, etc)
 Social and health facilities available
 Communication and transportation facilities available

IV. HEALTH STATUS OF EACH MEMBER OF THE FAMILY


 Medical history indicating current or past significant illnesses
 Health beliefs and practices conducive to health or illness
 Nutritional assessment – to include
o Measures of nutritional status of children like, weight,
height, etc.
o Dietary history specifying quality and quantity of
food/nutrient intake per day (24 hour diet recall)
o Eating/feeding habits and practices
 Developmental assessment of infants, toddlers and preschoolers
 Risk factor assessment indicating presence of major and
contributing modifiable risk factors
 Physical assessment indicating presence of illness
 Results of laboratory/diagnostic and other screening
procedures supportive of assessment findings
 Immunization status of family members
 Healthy lifestyle practices
 Adequacy of rest and sleep, exercise, use of protective
measures, relaxation and other stress management activities
 Use of promotive-preventive health services

V. PROBLEMS AND HEALTH TEACHINGS AND INTERVENTIONS


 Actual or potential health problems identified
 Interventions made with regard to the problems
 Health teachings done
