CONCLUSION
After reading and discussing the concepts discussed in this week’s module, we’ve come to the
conclusion that social media’s impact to the self is definitely more negative than positive. Based on the
self-promotional activities that constitute a good majority of our social media activity, people use social
media not as an avenue to express their true, raw selves but instead an image-a persona that we wish
to project to the online world. Since self-presentation can be easily overdone and it is a potentially
dishonest enterprise, it is only natural that we want to project what we believe to be a socially
acceptable image of ourselves online, regardless of whether or not it’s a minimally enhanced or over
enhanced version of ourselves. Self-presentation is strategic; how people want to present themselves
is entirely up to them and this allows opportunities for people to abuse this freedom. Though given that
social media has a lot to offer, we cannot deny the fact that it has become an avenue for over self-
presentation. Also, social media has never been a safe place. It can affect your self-esteem in any way
possible. When you are so fed up with a lot of great things from your peers and you feel down about
yourself having nothing like that of what they have, this decreases your confidence and your self-
concept is consecutively affected. With all these, one’s understanding of one’s self is a vital part of our
life and social media weighs with more negativity than it has good things to offer.
