1. You play on two feet, you train on two feet.

Fact: Animal predators aren’t slow or fat. Think about it; most creatures
with killer instinct are fast, lean, agile, competitive. They have to move
like lightning to catch their prey and dominate their surroundings. You
have to move. If you’re an athlete or serious about fitness, and your
workout involves spending most of the time lying on your back or a bench
or a ball while training, you need to fire your trainer immediately. Or if
you’re not using a trainer, you need to find one to show you what you’re
doing wrong. You compete on two feet, you move on two feet, you get
everywhere using two feet . . . why the hell are you lying down to train?
Science is constantly giving us new information that helps us get better
results using less time and energy. No question some of it has made
training and recovery more effective and efficient, but there’s still no
replacement for hard work and sweat. I do a lot of work on athletes using
muscle activation, which is basically a way to get the muscles to contract
while the athlete is lying on a table in a horizontal position. For some
athletes, this is a dream come true: Wait; you mean I can work those
muscles but I can keep my butt on the table? Where do I sign up? They’re
all crushed when I tell them muscle activation is only one part of our work,
and get off the damn table because we still have some real work to do.
And yes, I have lost clients over this. Somewhere, sometime, some
trainer told these guys they could get great results with little effort on their
part and they were like, “Sign me up!” Okay, good luck. Those are the
guys I usually hear from later in the season, but now instead of sitting on
the table they’re sitting on the bench.
You don’t need gadgets and gizmos and contraptions to be in good
shape. Push-ups, pull-ups, squats, lunges, presses, walking, running. Back
to the basics. Now there are machines for everything, and they’re all
designed to make the work easier and easier and easier. That’s what people
want, but it’s not what they need.
