Why Private Mobile Networks?
• For greater coverage – where there is no, or insufficient, public network
coverage or to rapidly and temporarily extend coverage.

• For control & security – by controlling the network, you maintain full
control over critical aspects of your business operations.

• For performance & reliability – take advantage of 3GPP technology and

scale. PMNs can be configured according to the needs of the application.

• To enhance productivity – by enabling new applications and optimizing

existing processes.

Private Networks

UKB was established in 2003 and bought a large amount of spectrum at auction.
However, this spectrum wasn’t reachable by mobile phones.

2003 UKB had an obligation from the regulator to do something with the spectrum,
but no obligation to launch a national offering.
The creation of a ‘Private Network’ offering was a natural solution.

2013 The first trial of a Private 4G Network for Heathrow airport took place in 2013.

Fixed wireless access on 4G was launched in 2014, initially in London and then
also Swindon.
2014 Full roll out at Heathrow in 2014.
Launch of 4G Private Network at Felixstowe also in 2014.
The first commercial
airport in the world
to launch a mission
critical 4G LTE network
“We are proud to be at the forefront of airport
innovation by introducing this technology.
This new platform enables a significant step
change in efficient working out on the airfield
and builds a greater resilience within our
safety, security, engineering and incident
management teams.”
Use cases: Ports
Operational efficiency
Connect cranes, workers, vehicles
and operations centre for continuous
communications

Harsh environment Worker safety

Sensors monitor environment for Smart wearable devices allow you to
anomalies and generate instant alerts track assets and staff to avoid collisions,
where remedial action is required and monitor employee well-being

Vehicle maintenance Moves per hour

Remote monitoring and preventative Plan and monitor routes for AGVs; 24/7 site
maintenance reduces downtime and surveillance enables you to identify and avoid
cost of repairs obstacles; real-time insights to optimise workflows

Site security Interference from ships comms

Full coverage to all parts of the site – Secure private network built to 3GPP standard
place HD CCTV at perimeter fencing ensures no interference from outside networks

Panel Discussion with Audience Q&A

Catherine Gull, Head of Business Development, Three Private Networks

Bryan Beal, Senior Director, Strategy and Innovation, VMWare

Shubh Agarwal, SVP 5G Solutions, Metaswitch

The PMN Technology Ecosystem
• There is a mature and robust ecosystem around private LTE
networks – for example, in terms of devices, equipment, and
integrators.

• Should we expect LTE to prevail over the medium-term? When

might 5G be able to match what LTE offers today?

• Should we think in terms of private mobile networks running LTE,

5G NSA and 5G SA in combination?
Private Mobile Network Deployment Architecture

• Where should private networks be fully isolated and standalone?

• And where should they be integrated with the operator network?

On-prem Edge Cloud
• The on-prem edge offers an opportunity to co-optimize network
and application processing to deliver superior performance.

• What is needed to make this happen in practice?

• What is the role of public clouds (applications) in relation to

network vendors (technology) and telecom operators (reach,
operations expertise)?
Spectrum for PMNs
• What spectrum types are most useful for PMNs?

• Will local-area enterprise licenses really change-the-game for

private mobile networks?

• Should we think in terms of spectrum layers, with services

mapped to the most appropriate spectrum (e.g. NB IoT and critical
voice on FDD and high bandwidth video on TDD)?

• What role might there be for unlicensed 5G (NR-U)?
