Question 1

For a lead–tin alloy of composition 78.0 wt% Sn–22 wt% Pb and at 180°C:
(a) Determine the mass fraction of α phase β phase.
(b) Determine the mass fraction of primary β microconstituent.
(c) Determine the mass fraction of eutectic microconstituent.
(d) Determine the mass fraction of eutectic β
(e) Draw the microstructure of different phase when the above composition is cooled
down from 500 to 25oC

Question 2

What do you mean by hardenability? Describe the experimental process of Jominy test.
What influence does the presence of alloying elements have on the shape of a
hardenability curve? Briefly explain the effect and the reason behind it.

Question 4

What are the differences between glass and ceramics? Discuss the process of vitrification
for the glass formation. Explain how Tg is related to the vitrification.

Question 5

Formulate the condensation polymerization reaction of nylon 6,6 from adipic acid and
hexamethylene diamine. Then calculate the necessary mass of hexamethylene diamine
and adipic acid to yield 30 kg of completely linear nylon 6,6.
