BLOOD TRANSFUSION (DURING PROCEDURE)

1. Verify the information to the blood information.

2. Instruments to be used for blood transfusion:

-Needle (18 gauge or larger)

-Y tubing with inline filter

3. Prime the y line with normal saline and then transfuse the blood 2ml per minute in the first 15 minutes of
the transfusion.

4. During a blood transfusion:

-A needle is inserted into a vein in your arm or hand.

-The needle is connected to a tube and a bag of blood.

-The blood runs through the tube into your vein.

5. First 15 minutes of transfusion

-A nurse will remain with you for at least the first 15 minutes of the transfusion. This is because most reactions with
blood transfusions, if they happen, occur immediately.

Examples of transfusion reactions include:

fever
back pain
itching
difficulty of breathing
chills

(If you have these symptoms, the transfusion will be stopped immediately.)
