TITLE: CSSD CLEAN AREA

1.0 PURPOSE
1.1 To prevent cross infection by eliminating contact between sterile and non-
sterile items and by limiting employee – carried infections by controlling
movement between areas and enforcing a dress code.

2.0 DEFINITION
2.1 Restricted Area- the access to which is strictly limited to essential personnel
with the purpose of protecting individuals against undue risk from exposure to
various materials– e.g. ionizing radiation, high-level pathogens, toxic chemicals
and others.

3.0 RESPONSIBILITY
3.1 Head of the CSSD
3.1.1 It is the responsibility of the head of the CSSD to implement this
policy and maintain the sterility of the area.

4.0 POLICY
4.1 There will be clean area of the CSSD physically divided from the
decontamination area, for wrapping, sterilization, storage and distribution of
sterilized supplies.

5.0 PROCEDURE
5.1 The CSSD area should have a separate entrance, which does not connect to
the decontamination area.
5.2 There should be no casual visitors to the CSSD and official visitors should
dress as per dress code.
5.3 All entrances to CSSD should be marked “restricted area” and should have
decontamination mats and supply of gowns, shoe covers and head covers, as well as, bins and
gown racks.
5.4 Eating, drinking, smoking or horseplay is not allowed in the clean area.
5.5 Issue of sterile items to take place only from door and not through the dirty

5.6 There should be no dry dusting on the clean area.
