The park’s ecosystem consists of 67 different species of mammals, 270 species of birds,
11 species of fish, two species of reptiles and four species of amphibians.
The threatened animal species in the park include Canada lynx, greenback cutthroat trout,
Mexican spotted owl and North American wolverine.
Climbing opportunities at the park are limited to Longs Peak and Lumpy Ridge. Longs
Peak is 14,259 feet in elevation and experiences year-round winter conditions.
The scenic drives are accessible through the Old Fall River Road and the Trail Ridge
Road.
The Glacier Creek Stables and Moraine Park Stables offer horseback riding tours of the
park. Horses are allowed on 80% of the trails.
The Lily Lake group picnic area is the only picnic area that requires a reservation.
Reservations require a $350 administrative fee.
The park offers 355 miles of hiking trails ranging in elevation from 7,500 to 12,000 feet
in elevation. The 23 hiking trails vary in experience levels.
The park requires a permit to travel overnight in the wilderness. The Beaver Meadows
Visitor Center and Kawuneeche Visitor Center offer permits and information about
wilderness camping.
To fish at the park, a Colorado fishing license is required for people 16 and over.
