Assignment 4: Vibration Control

1. a. Describe the differences between an undamped vibration absorber and


damped vibration absorber?

b. A hollow steel shaft of outer diameter 5 cm, inner diameter 3.8 cm, and
length 75 cm carries a solid disc of diameter 38 cm and mass 45 kg. Another
hollow steel shaft of length 50 cm, carrying a solid disc of diameter 15 cm
and mass 9 kg, is attached to the first disc, as shown Figure Q1. The ratio
of the outer diameter to the inner diameter of the shaft is 4/3. Shear modulus
of the steel structure is 90 GPa.

i. Determine the inner and outer diameters of the shaft such that the
attached shaft-disc system acts as an absorber.

ii. Evaluate the resulting frequencies of the system after the absorber is
added.
